I pickup Buffy up at the airport yesterday!

Post by Marty »

She is a gorgeous girl, but unbelievably timid. I can see why she couldn't handle a show career. So we are just letting her do things in her own time, as she wants to, and she has made a bit of progress today. She came out of her crate to explore the backyard for a couple hours, even running around. But every few minutes she would come back in to see if we were still there, although she runs the other way when she sees we are.

It will take time and patience, I know, but I haven't even seen a rescue who was that skittish. She ate one bowl of food at midnight last night when no one but me was awake. So at least she's had some nourishment in 2 days...she'll probably do better tonight.

So it's hard to take pics, but here's a couple. I know you won't miss the ears, but take a second look at the size of the paws!

Oh, Marty, she's gorgeous. I'm so happy for you. Those paws are HUGE! Funny, I never considered Bassets big dogs until I became friends with a trainer who has them. Like you said, with time and patience, I'm sure she'll come out of her shell.

Buffy is really cute!

Just give her time, remember also the stress she probably endured with the trip...

We are inching forward. She's been out of the crate all day today so far, learned the doggie door...so it's been in and out every few minutes. She let me put her new collar on and even took some treats from my hand...shaking, but she did it!

Oh, Marty, that's wonderful progress! I know how hard it is for a shy dog to do that.

This really a learning experience for me, so I hope you all don't mind me posting about it. She liked the doggie door, maybe too much, and spent most of the time outside in the sunshine, with regular runs inside.

The sun went down and it was rather cold...I like my dogs in the warm house at night, so we closed the laundry room door where the dog door is, so after pacing a bit, she went in her crate.

I took her for a short walk for the first time tonight...oh wow, of course she was great on lead....she caught a scent, went for it, then looked back at me...I told her it was OK, and walks are for fun now!

Everything sounds wonderful Marty! I know you'll win her over. Heaven only knows what she's been through - and that plane trip would be enough to rattle even the toughest hound!

Oh Marty, she's going to blossom like the beautiful flower she is under your tender loving care! What a beauty! I'm a sucker for the timid ones!
