Squirt Surgery Jan 19
Squirt Surgery Jan 19
Well, Squirt goes tomorrow for his neuter and I am going to ahve the vet check his head and eyes while he is under...those scars seem to break open on occassion and the other day I noticed some "weepy" stuff from one of them...and in another I can feel something hard, but don't dare pick at it in case if it a bone fragment or something...
So since he will be hurting at both ends, I have set up for him to stay at least overnight to rest a bit more and any observations that need to be done since it is not just a routine neuter...
Munkie will also be neutered, but I will bring him home and to the bathroom to convalesce...

Davet, Squirt is Tambrey's puppy. (pics in Debbie's Cloud)
Tambrey, I'm glad to hear he's getting everything checked. There very well could be foreign debris under those scars.
As for the eye, who knows, doubtful an entropion can be done, but if he's seen anything like this before, you never know. Personally, I think it should be evaluated by a canine opthamologist, since Squirt is still growing and you want to avoid problems later on.

Thanks davet...I will let you know what the vet says about the scars and whatever is causing them to not really heal properly...they look like someone may have taken a claw end of a hammer to him...just the way they were when he was smaller...the spacing and identical shape of them...and now that he is growing bigger every day, it is like they are growing as well...
Traci...yes, he cannot do too much tomorrow since he is just a "general" vet or whatever...but if he suspects anything, I can get Squirt to the vet hospital in th city for further testing to see what needs to be done...but at least I can get an idea while he is knocked out tomorrow...
Again...I will let you know what he says about it...

Re: Squirt Surgery Jan 19
Squirt came through his neutering just fine...when we went to visit this afternoon he was in the "playpen"...an area that is actually about half of their boarding room where the dogs can run and go potty...the vet is downtown so no outside area...
Vet said yes, he hada crushing blow to the skull and it has actually caved it in a bit over his LEFT eye...he has scars above both, but the left side there is a difference...he said it feels like bone fragments, but they do not have an x-ray machine at this facility to confirm anything...when they need x-rays done, they take the animal to the chiropractor's office next door...small town...
but he said he did not even want to attempt to open it up, in case the fragment(s) were embedded in the skull or if he moved something it would affect the skull or eye area....
We will call the hospital in the city and set a time soon to go get that checked, x-rayed and see what is going on in there...
He said Squirt is a purebred Lab with a deformed jaw...that is why his lower jaw is set back do far...he said he has quite the overbite, but it does not affect his eating or tooth growth so far...but we will get that checked at the hospital as well...
He figures, knowing how farmers are about their purebreds...since this pup has a deformed jaw, he would not bring anymoney from the litter or "look nice" so the person probably clubbed him with something and left him to die...but he did not...and he is ours now!!
Squirt is about 7-8 months old at this time...and 70 pounds...
Munkie came through fine...he is resting upstairs in the bathroom...we will pick up Squirt tomorrow morning...actually, DH will because I work!!

Re: Squirt Surgery Jan 19
thats amazing, I mean going next door toe the chiropracters for x-ray...hear something new every day, and this was it for the day
Re: Squirt Surgery Jan 19
yeah...I wondered that too...about the x-rays...but the vet said no sense in spending money on one that theyreally do not use alot of, because if the case is too bad, they are sent to the hospital anyways...
so the chiropractor has a machine that a critter (2 or 4 legged) can stand and be x-rayed that way, or it can be moved to do one laying down if necessary...
I will call Monday to see about getting Squirt seen by the specialists in the city to check his skull and eyesocket area or actually the area above his eye...as well as his jaw...make sure that by the time he is done growing it will not affect his eating or cause tooth pain/troubles...

I'm relieved to hear you're going to see a more qualifed vet.
I'm quite applalled however, about the use of the chiropractic's xray machine for pets. This isn't good practice, especially considering zoonotic factors and human health policies. Both the vet and the chiropractor could get in alot of trouble for this.

Our local vets are great for routine care and are wonderful guys and very caring, compassionate, etc....but you have to remember too that this is a small rural area, most people do not have alot of money to spend on vet care, so in order to keep expenses down, they do not have alot of new or even sometimes standard office equipment...
They said they would rahter be able to be there for the routine care that pets require and keep overhead as low as possible, so people would keep up on that care...and as seldom as an x-ray machine is ever used, they could not justify the expenses and room for one...the clinic is small as well and would require major renovations...adding expenses once again...
So as I said, the the rare occassion that an x-ray might need to be taken, they will set an appointment at the chiropractors when people are not present, and get the animal in...
but usually, the animal hospital is about 30 miles away, and a pet can be transported there for more urgent care when necessary....
for example....to keep costs low....Squirt, as a >60 pound dog, neuter, total was $85...his shots, including rabies, were $26.50 and his overnight stay was $11.00
Simple rural vets with routine good routine small animal care as well as more expansive farm animal care...one vet is more the large animal expert where the other does most of the small animal care, but they do cross over and help each other when necessary

I can understand expenses, but a vet clinic without an xray machine isn't offering that much, in my opinion. Many of the problems in vet med require an xray machine, and it pays for itself in time. I won't argue your vet's good virtues, Tambrey, I'm sure he does what he can with the limits he has. But, ideally, he could explore used equipment, the sources to find these are unlimited. The uses for an xray machine are so various, it would be substandard NOT to have one.
The fact remains, there are public health concerns regarding the use of the xray machine between humans and animals. I'm surprised the chiropractor has not been fined for doing so, or complained against. Are the human patients even aware of this? It's not only the xray machine, but the entire premises where animals enter, are handled, etc that the chiropractor needs to be mindful of. Zoonotic potential exists considerably here. Another example, what about people with allergies, asthma, that suffer because of the stray pet hairs, etc? They probably have no clue why they might have a flare-up.
