I never intended something this soon....
Re: I never intended something this soon....
I am so glad you have decided on this! I feel certain getting Buffy is a good, positive and very fortunate thing to happen in your life right now.
Re: I never intended something this soon....
Yay, she will be flying in next Saturday...as long as the weather stays warm enough!
The breeder felt the flight would be easier and quicker for her, as she doesn't like to travel much. I did offer to drive up there, but we'll do what she thinks is best.
Her new collar, leash and name tags came in (I was jumping the gun on that one)...she comes with a crate... Now I need to get her brand of dog food (will be switching that one), replenish the snack supply, and make some liver treats to welcome her. My DH would commit me if I brought home any more toys...LOL...I was pushing it with the collar and leash.

Be sure the breeder gives you complete health records, proof of vaccinations and rabies, a copy of her health certificate (this is required before airline transport anyway I think). If she doesn't give you records, get the name of her vet and call the vet to transfer her records to your own vet.
It would probably be a good idea to have her examined by your vet immediately anyway.

Re: I never intended something this soon....
Yes, she needs to have a health certificate before flying, which we are paying for.
I will ask for her records to be transferred..thank you Traci..I sometimes forget how easy the internet can make things. I do plan to take her to my Vet within a day or so of her arrival. They are good about that! And arrange for a spay.
MomPaws...the breeder got an estimate of $178 to fly her from Cincinnati to Atlanta. It is based on the total weight ( dog + crate) and the size of the crate. She sent a dog to Germany last weekend...ouch! We pay shipping charges when we pick her up, so it could be more or less. Makes me wonder what happens if someone doesn't pick the dog up...no chance of that here...but...
Can I also say that I detest the word "shipped" in this context...even though it is commonly use? I much prefer "transported to her new home!"

Re: I never intended something this soon....
Congrats on your new family member. Just curious though, why you would buy from a breeder rather then taking in a rescue?
Re: I never intended something this soon....
Good question, and it took a lot of thought on my part before I did it, seeing as I have been slightly involved with a Basset rescue.
Most of the rescues are poorly bred from puppy mills, and have structural problems, and not so often temperament problems...and Bassets don't need that! My Biscotti is a good example, as she required $1300 spinal surgery and 6 months of tender care to recuperate. She has a bad case of thunderstorm phobia, so every time it rains, she panics. But we love her and have given her what she needed.
Winnie was not a rescue, but from a BYB...a better example of the breed, but we have struggled through 2 emergency bladder stone surgeries, constant monitoring of her urine to avoid another one. The last year of her life...I don't know if it was age or heredity...probably both. But I'm sure we spent an average of $500 a month...I won't even go into the time involved. But she was my heart dog, so it was OK. Money didn't really matter here.
To be honest, I (we) need a breather. Buffy has been health tested for problems common to Bassets, and so has her family. I know that anything can happen, but we have a better chance of having a healthy dog for a few years, hopefully more. It's just a matter of what we need right now.
I will still continue to do what I can for Basset rescue in my community, because I love them!

Re: I never intended something this soon....
I can understand that. I still don't feel that I have fully recovered from my five month battle with my five cats and coccidia and that was almost a year ago. I lost a cat to that too. The peace of having seven currently healthy animals is great.
