Lack of fur growth

Post by Jamar »

I have a 16-year old cat, Little Miss Annie, who had a 3" wide swath of fur shaved from one side through her belly to her other side last January 2003.
This was done so an ultrasound (I believe) test could be performed to see if she was suffering from heart disease. (She isn't.) However, not much of her fur has grown back in.

She has a very bland diet, baby food meats and I/D feline, because she was throwing up quite a bit. Her vet ordained the new food regime.

Anyway, I want to know if there is anything that can be done to get her fur to grow back in at a faster rate. At this rate, she'll be 100 years old - in human years - before my little black fur ball gets to be totally furry once again.

Little Miss Annie does take 2 5m Tapazol daily, and she generally seems to be doing fine.

There really isn't anything you can do to excelerate fur growth. It is not unusual for the fur at the abdomen area to take the longest to grow back.

As a side note, be sure you are monitoring the thyroid levels and medication, it may need to be slightly adjusted. We generally require this to be done every three months, and at our clinic, we won't refill tapazole without retesting.

I wonder about the continued use of baby food, it's not properly formulated for a cat's nutritional requirements. While I understand her sensitivity, I wouldn't suggest long term use of it. The I/D can be used long term for the condition, but ideally, you still want to incorporate some type of maintenance diet so that she is getting required nutrients.

Traci - thank you for your comments. By the way, where is your clinic?
