I've been away a looong time!!!! Need help with shedding!!

Post by robin »

Hi Everyone,

some of you may remember us, Robin and her Himalayan, Isabelle. I went back to work and have not had 5 minutes to post to the board. Isabelle has really grown up and now is a 1 year old. This summer, though, we have had a horrible problem with shedding. Everything in my house is covered with long white fur. I brush her every day, sometimes twice and yet the fur flies.

What do you suggest. When she was on totally canned food she was much better, but that was probably because she was much younger. Now she won't touch the stuff. She is strictly and Science Diet gal. She used to eat Nutromas and Wysong but then all of a sudden--NOPE!!! In any event, I could really use some help. I'm embarrased for company to come over because they leave covered in Isabelle.

Hi Robin! Welcome back...I remember you and Isabelle :) My cats always shed more in the summer than in the winter...I too have noticed much more fur on the furniture, floor, me than a few months back. But you know I too noticed an improvement when my cats went from dry to canned food...fortunately they still love the canned stuff, although they'd kill for a few morsels of dry on occasion  I'm not sure of any real solutions though for shedding though...I'd be happy to hear anyone elses ideas on the subject.

:D Hi Tina,

Last time I was here it didn't look anything like this. This board looks so cool!!!! I also remember you have a million cats (ok, maybe 1/2 million). Are they all doing well? I'm so glad to be back!!!

Back to the catfood issue. I can not believe that "miss picky self" aka Isabelle, turned up her adorable pink nose to delicious canned food. Alas, she did. As bad as my house is right now, I'm ready to bring lots of stuff home for her to try. Only problem is, if you do that to a cat, you will have lots and lots of tummy troubles. What's a fur mommy to do??

Hi Robin! Welcome back!

I don't have any suggestions on lessening Isabelle's shedding...if there's a miracle way to keep cat hair from getting on everything let me know LOL!

Glad to see you're back. Hope you can post more often now!

Thanks Bridget,

Right now I'm just vacuuming every 5 minutes. I once had a cat that liked to be vacuumed. No such luck this time. I'm pretty sure Isabelle would lose all her fur due to fright if she had to be in the same room with the big sucking monster. She is so funny. She watches me from the top of the fridge!!

Hey, Robin, welcome back :)

Just a suggestion, it might help.......try adding linatone to her canned food, it's a supplement that has added omega fatty acids...this might help to condition her skin and fur and may reduce the shedding. It comes in a liquid, so easy to pour a teaspoon over her canned food. I don't think I'd use it every day, maybe just once or twice a week.

I may not know the best way to stop shedding, but I do know the best tool to use to enable you to comb as much shedding hair out of her as possible. Look for a comb called a shedding comb. it is metal and has alternating long and short teeth. It is a miracle, especially on long haired cats. (I groom dogs/cats for a living, and I would not know how to get through a day without this tool)

:P Jen,

That sounds great!! Where would I find that. She loves to be brushed, but it just doesn't get all the hair. What's really funny is to see all the hair all over the floor right after I brush her. I'm telling you, she is probably only about the size of a gerbil except for all this hair. It's the part that weighs 10 lbs. (ha ha)
