Skin Problem II

Post by Mel »

Traci: Thank you for the response. I did have a culture done and am awaiting test results. I took the collar off today for a bit and although he is not scratching continually he did scratch it and now it is red again. So I did put the collar back on I had read that witch hazel is gentle enough for cat's skin and can be used for irritations. I am as you can imagine very frustrated. When I brought him to the vet she did give him an antibiotic shot to reduce the itching as well as the distemper shot. It has now been 11 days since the visit to the vet and it just breaks my heart to watch him bang into the walls with this collar around his neck (funny but sad!!). I have sprayed my home with a disenfectant and washed everything that they lay on. I just don't know whether I should keep treating with minconzole or leave it alone and just wash the area with soap and water.
Thanks for your help

I dont think there is any harm in treating with the miconazole until at least the culture result is ready, but do call your vet and find out about that. There are other topicals that are milder you can try, such as a simple triple-antibiotic ointment, panalog, etc.

I would also suggest clipping his back claws, they are a prime area for dirt and bacteria, and everytime he scratches, the bacteria enters. (or the front claws if he is grooming his face excessively)

Traci: Once again thank you for the response. The vet was the one who suggested miconozole when I originally brought him in. Being she did not know what it was, she suggested treating as a fungal infection using miconozole. I called for the test results today and the vet still has not gotten back to me, needless to say I'm a little annoyed. Anyway, thanks for your help, much appreciated.
