Questioning a certain drug use in cats...Traci? Davet?

I was looking up the meds that the vet RX'd for Jeremy (Primor - Sulfadimethoxine and Ormetoprim ) and one website...Pet Education.com...clearly indicates it should be used in cats..in fact it says it like this

Do NOT use in cats

the not is clearly emphasised.

I'm wondering if it is because of the possibility of crystal formation in the urine? If it's not recommend or approved for use in cats why on earth would a vet RX it for a tiny kitten??

I understand your confusion, Tina, so I'll try to break it down for you...

Sulfadimethoxine(albon)/ormetroprim and sulfadiazine/trimethoprim(tribrissen) both generally have the same dual actions for a wide spectrum antibiotic against several bacterials. While tribrissen is generally used for cats, some literature suggests that ormetroprim has less risk of adverse reactions. ALL sulfonamides have a potential for an adverse reaction, your vet may have dosed this with the assumption that it might be more effective for a bacterial or gastrointestinal bacteria (staph, strep, salmonella, pasteurella, clostridium, just to name a few). If you are concerned, call and ask him why he didn't choose tribrissen rather than ormetroprim. In any event, you might want to recheck another fecal at the end of this week or next to see if anything else is revealing (i.e., coccidia, salmonella, giardia, etc). If from now until then, the diarrhea persists longer than three days, you'll want to discontinue the ormetroprim and choose something else, this is where another fecal will be necessary to try to isolate the problem.

Thanks....that was the only sight I could find that said anything...Bridget said the vet checked the drug book for dosage in cats and the other vet tonight concurred with the RX of Primor, so I feel a little better. I'll see if I can get another fecal done next week.
