Black Poop?
Black Poop?
I have a kitten, which i believe is around 6-weeks-old. This morning i noticed she had black poop. Then a few minutes ago, she pooped black again.. Could it be what she eats? Shes getting over an upper respritory lately, im pretty sure that was what it was. Ive been feeding her canned food and milk with some medicine in it. She acts totally fine, which is why my father doesnt want to take her to the vet. I think she has blood in her stool... but my dad just thinks its normal since she hasnt changed at all in personality... still the wildy old kitty she's always been. Is this blood in her stool, is it something else, or am i just over reacting to seeing something abnormal?

Friskie-
MIlk is not good for kittens/cats. They tend to be lactose intolerant. Please use a kitten formula Just Born, or Catsip (like milk for cats).
I would take a stool sample to vet for analysis, esp if you suspect blood in her stool, could be from extreme irritation. What kind of food do you feed. A high quality kitten like Iams, Nutro, or Science Diet is best for kittens.

Re: Black Poop?
What kind of medicine is in the milk? Is it perscribed by a vet? If not, why are you giving it to her? Has the kitten been in to see a vet at all? Where is the cat's mother, and was she properly weaned? If this cat hasn't had a thorough evaluation by a vet, it needs one immediately. She could have worms, there could be an infection, she needs to be vaccinated, and she needs to be tested for communicable diseases. Especially at such a young age, veterinary care is of the utmost importance. Please, have your kitten thoroughly evaluated by a competent vet immediately.
Re: Black Poop?
she is awfully young to be away from her mother...most kittens nurse until 10-12 weeks, or longer...
I would be concerned and take her to the vet....also having a URI at such a young age would be of concern enough to get her there...
kittens can turn from "looking and acting" healthy do dying in only hours...
their systems are not mature enough to handle much of any kind of stress to their bodies....
I would get her to the vet somehow...someway....ASAP...and take as recent of a stool sample along as you can....

Agree with everyone else....vet visit TODAY!
Your dad is wrong, black stools are NOT normal for kittens and cats!
If there is an upper respiratory infection, it needs to be treated appropriately by your vet, do NOT use any over-the-counter medicines or human medicines of any kind, they are dangerous and deadly to cats.
Cease feeding milk, unless it is Kitten KMR formula, and only if she isn't thoroughly weaned on to kitten food yet. See your vet, he can determine her age, and discuss her nutritional needs.
She may need to be dewormed, your vet can deworm her with a safe medication, do NOT deworm her yourself!

The kitty was abandoned by her mother, which is why i have her... she probably would have died like her sister. My dad bought her some Best Choice canned cat food, and recently bought her some Friskies. Ill try to get her to drink water, tho she doesnt really like it. Need any other info?
I've been trying to get my dad to take her to the vet, but he doesnt like to "waste" money... Ive told him serveral times that we need to get her check out, but he says she's fine. How can i convince him??? He got mad at me yesterday b/c he thinks im over reacting about this. Today my kitty pooped black for the 3rd time... so i know its not just a 1-time deal. Please, my mom isnt incharge of the vet thing, thats my dad... How can i convince him??? I really dont wanna lose my kitty.. ive told him that and he said that i wouldnt lose her, shes fine...
Edit: should i wait until possibly this weekend and see if my vet will take a look at her? Cuz i guess my dog has to go get a shot...

Re: Black Poop?
The dog needs a shot, but your kitty can't have an exam?
Show him or your mom these posts. They obviously are in need of knowing when a kitten is sick....your kitten needs a vet exam, deworming, pronto.

Re: Black Poop?
No its not that they wont take my kitty to the vet, but they will my dog. its more of our dog had an already appointment made by the vet to get the shot. So since we'd be going there, my mom said we'll just have to vet check on him then.
Re: Black Poop?
Um, how hard is it to make a new appointment, for the kitten?
My point is, your kitten needs an exam, immediately. You need to know that tiny young kittens who have upper respiratory infections, can fail quite rapidly without proper treatment. This is not a matter to be taken lightly. He also needs the stool checked, and dewormed appropriately. He also needs appropriate nutrition, Best Choice and Friskies are generic foods, not appropriate for a growing, developing kitten. Use Iams kitten food or Science Diet kitten food or Eukanuba kitten food. Alittle pricer than commercial store foods, but they are better for your kitten, clearly.
NO milk, NO medicine that was not specifically prescribed by a vet! If you gave her any human medication, do you realize that this could be fatal? Human medications are not to be used for cats, what did you give her? If you gave her any human medications, any one of them can cause blood/blackened stools, this means it is toxic! If you did, you need to get her to a vet immediately.
It is always best to get a new, tiny young kitten immediately to the vet for a thorough exam and deworming, because if you don't, her immune system may not be able to battle serious viruses and bacterial infections. She has little immunity as it is, your vet will approximate her age and determine when she should have her first vaccinations. If she has an upper respiratory infection right now, it may get much more serious, and you'll end up paying way more in the long term because she didn't get treatment right away.

Re: Black Poop?
I've been trying my best to get my dad on my side, but he's being stubborn and wont listen to me. He assured me that he's been around cats all of this life and this cat is fine, and that he's seen kitties with black poop that turned out fine. I believe my father gave the cat a bit of amoxicillin, which our vet told us to use on our rabbit a few years back when he had an URI. I dont know if there is much i can do about switching to Iams or Science diet, i really wish i could, but my dad prefers the cheaper stuff.. he jsut doenst like spending money, and he's that one that gets the pet food.
Is there anything i can do until this weekend for my kitty, cuz my parents refuse to make another appointment, and ill just have to bring the little kitty a long with my dog. Please, is that anything i can do for my kitty, i love her to death.
