My cat wakes us up every am at 3-4

My cat ( he is 2 yrs old, neutered male alley cat) used to jump into bed with us when my husband's alarm went off at 545, then he cuddles with him, etc. Since last may or april, he has been coming into our room at 3-4 every am, and fids somehting to get into to wake us up to let him out. Now that it is winter here, we htought that would stop. Nope. He doesn't want out, doesn't really want to play with us, just wants us up.if we close the door, he actually knocks for at least ten minutes, and if we ignore him, he starts chewing on the wood! How do I retrain him?? We need our sleep. He gets the house to himself from 8-5, which I am sure he sleeps the entire time. If we come home from lunch or school, we wake him, but he goes right back to sleep when we leave.

Indoors ONLY!

Also, try playing with him, actively engaging with him during playtime before you retire at night, for at least 10-15 minutes. Provide him interactive and interesting toys to play with if he wakes up in the night, etc. If you're in the position to, and can afford to, consider getting another kitty for his companionship. Again, indoors only!

I have the same problem with my 3 year black and white girl, Chloe.

She comes in and jumps up on the nightstand or dresser and starts either knocking items off, or hits the dresser handles until I get up to feed her or close our bedroom door.She has a companion 8 year old female, but she sleeps all night long. I suspect CHloe is looking for attention, as she will start chattering and banging with her paw is you do not look at her or acknowledge her presence.

I am going to try to tire her out at night and see if this helps. I would like to feed them together in the morning.
