Cat Cold

Post by Justice »

I think one of my girls has a cold. Last night she came to cuddle & her nose was soaking wet...some of it even dripped on my arm it was so wet. Poor thing. She's not sneezing, peeing & pooping well, still active when we play.

It could just be the change in weather, I guess, but she won't come into the bedroom with us at night (where the heat is) so I have lots of blankets for her downstairs which she seems to use. I would pick her up & bring her into the heat but she still won't let me pick her up. Poor baby.

Any suggestions? Is there any way I can be sure it's just a cold and not an URI?

About the only way to tell for sure is have your vet check her out.

A wet nose doesn't indicate an upper respiratory infection, most cats do commonly have a wet nose and is considered normal. When it is accompanied by other symptoms however, is when you need to be concerned.

Is there something in the bedroom that she is avoiding? If your house is cold, she should have access to a warm area, so investigate the bedroom for signs of something she may be afraid of or is avoiding.

If she is developing any sudden behavioral changes, and/or any signs of ill health, get her examined by your vet promptly.

Thanks Traci. I feel better about her soaking wet nose!

Both girls had a 4 in 1, and they do not go outside at all. Malbie is still skiddish with us, but she has come a long way since May. She actually cuddles now, but won't let me pick her up. She has to come to me.

She will come into the bedroom, but on her time. So when the heat is on, we must close the door - Sydney will come up with me when I go to bed, but Malbie won't...so she gets locked out basically. I think it's mean, but my husband won't leave the door cracked due to the heat - it's not central heating, so we only heat the rooms we are using as to not waste heat & money. We are trying to figure out another way, but for now, that's the way it is. Sydney has no problem staying all night, but of course if she wanted to leave we would get up & let her out (or let malbie in if she was on the other side of the door waiting...but that has not happened yet).

I make sure she has lots of blankets and she has a favorite pillow she cuddles with. Untill I can convince her to come up when i go to bed, she's downstairs by herself at night.

Last night was warm, so we did not need the heat - and Malbie joined us about an hour after I went into bed. So I don't think shes afraid of the bedroom.

I just wish she would let me pick her up! I would bring her into the bedroom at bedtime!

Thanks again,
EJ

Does she have any other symptoms of ill health? IF so, don't wait, get her seen by your vet promptly.

If you notice her nose is wet moreso when she may be cold, due to insufficient or undistributed heat in your home, then that's probably why it's wet. But again, if she has any other symptoms or change in behavior, get her seen.

Try providing a special kitty bed in your bedroom and make several attempts to introduce it to her and put a special toy in it that she is fond of....maybe provide another bed too for your other kitty.
