Urgent Help German Shepherd

Post by keshav.d »

I have a 11 year old female german shepherd. She was operated for mammary tumour 8 days back, though the wound is healing fine she has developed several probelms, which might have beent here earlier but wasn't diagnosed.
Prior to this she has arthritis and that has just worsened. She is unable to walk and her rear legs have swollen up.
Today i reveived her blood work which on consultation with the vet here, described her condition as "severe". I don't have much clue about these figures but am hoping for any kind of advise.
Total W B C Count : 1,24,000
Differential Count
Neutrophils : 93%
BIO CHEMISTRY
Creatinine :2.0 Mg/dl
SGPT :120 U/L

I am typed out the figures the Vet told me where abnormal, the test also confirmed that it isn't Lukemia. She has lost her appetite and hasn't eaten anything now fow about 3 days, drinks alot of water and i try and squeeze in a little milk when she can have. Her breath is laboured and i the vet said could be a possibility of fluids in her lungs and region around the heart.
She struggles to walk a few 5 to 6 feet. As a result she hasn't be able to pass urine and stools
Any help and advise well be greatly appriciated. If you could forward this information and obatin anything at all i will be extremely greatful.
Thanks in advance

Is your dog being hospitalized? If not, get her back in to your vet or an emergency vet immediately, RIGHT NOW.

It sounds like there is a severe infection going on, but your vet needs to find out where, and if it's something else. If he thinks there is fluid in the chest cavity, he needs to be addressing this IMMEDIATELY. When the mammary cancer was diagnosed, were xrays done to see if it had potentially metasticized to the lungs? Xrays may need to be repeated immediately (today), but you need to address the fluid buildup first....to an emergency vet ASAP.

I totally agree with Traci. She is the expert with veterinary care, but I know a lot about infection. This sounds like a systemic infection that needs IMMEDIATE vet care. (May or may not be related to the surgery, but I suspect it IS a surgical complication).

Was a blood culture drawn?

I am so sorry for your loss! Although you got to keep your wonderful gsd longer than I did mine, I think it is worse for you than for me, as my `Eowyn went suddenly, totally unexpectedly. Please look into the "Best friend gone" URLs provided on this board (I can't site my own list right now because I'm on a new computer; haven't transferred all data yet; but most of mine I think are there too.)

You will be in my thoughts.
