kitten going outside the box!

Post by peachesmommy »

hi there guys, i am back!! i ended up keeping one of the kittens from the litter i was taking care of! anyways she was doing really good, we had her potty trained and everything was going great until just about 2 weeks ago! i started noticing her pooping outside her box! but the funny thing is that she will go in the box and go potty just not all the time and i am baffled as to why! i have the litter box with the lid over it, so i have taken the lid off thinking that that might help but so far NO good! she is about4 months old at this point and i am trying to keep my patience with her but i am losing it really quickly cause i am cleaning it up at least 3 times a day!! so any advice that you can give me would be REALLY appreciated! thanks so much!

btw, i keep the box clean, i clean it at every day, so there isn't a lot of mess in there!!

Maybe she doesn't like the litter you use, have you tried changing the litter?

Is there any stress in the home lately?

Try to think back when she first missed the litterbox....anything unusual occuring in the home at that time? Did you have guests, change of routine, or ? Anything unusual occuring in the area of the litterbox?

Is she straining in the litterbox or are her stools normal and formed? Does she seem ill or any behavior changes? If so, you should get her checked by your vet just to make sure.

btw, nothing new had changed, everything is always "the same" in my house! she is going pee pee in the litter box, and she goes in just fine, but she just won't poo in there! she doesn't seem ill at all, in fact she is perfectly healthy, she was just in the vet a couple weeks ago for shots! i just don't know what to do!

Do you have one litter box or two? Since it sounds like you have two kitties, you might try two litter boxes in different locations. As Traci has said, sometimes they like to "pee" in one box and defecate in another. Or, maybe she is intimidated for some reason using the same box as your other kitty. It certainly might be worth a try to add another box and see what happens.

Good luck!

Did you tell your vet about the urinating issues? Did he take a urine sample and test it, rule out urinary tract infection, etc? If not, get a new appointment to get that ruled out immediately. Is she spayed yet?

Make sure the location of the litterbox is in a quiet, private area, away from heavy foot traffic, away from large appliances and away from noises. As Anne said, provide another, new box.

In the event she may be sensitive to certain types of litter, choose two different types, and place one type in one box, another in the other box to see if she has a preference. Or, you can try placing only paper towels in one box and see if she uses it (just place two or three sheets of paper towels in the box, do not tear or shred them)

Use only enzymatic cleaners to clean the areas she has urinated/defecated on...any other cleaner will only mask the scent temporarily and she will return to that area to re-mark. Petastic might be a good option to clean the areas with.

my cat was doing the same thing, except she would poop in the litter box but not pee in it. my vet suggested i get two litterboxes, and that worked, i got a different type of litter box and now she uses that one... she apparently just didn't like the old one...
