Is there protein in chicken broth (homemade)?
Is there protein in chicken broth (homemade)?
Trying to get Winnie to drink something. I just used 2 bnls skinless breasts to boil up, and she finally drank a fair amount. But I was wondering if this might add to the protein level that she consumes. Same question with beef. All meat and fat gets removed.
Re: Is there protein in chicken broth (homemade)?
should be no problem as long as it is not excessiivly salted, but again anything you do diet wise, keep a mental note of it incase adverse reacataion occur, such as screaming diarrhea
No salt at all...should have said that....
I feel a little better. Got her to drink maybe 1 1/c cups of broth over the day, with some slopping...typical. Got canned food from the Vet, which she ate tonight...about 1/2 can. Not much, but it works for me right now.
Vet has a new assistant...an older lady...maybe semi-retired and working part-time for him. I met her today when I picked up the food, and liked her a lot. She seemed to think Winnie may need another fluid treatment, which I was thinking also, so I will take her in on Monday morn if still needed.
This is so hard, and I thank you for being there to listen!

I'm actually concerned neither her appetite or water consumption has improved much in the last two weeks, if I'm remembering from your posts. And yes, she probably is dehydrated if she isn't drinking enough or eating her normal amounts. Maybe you can push the bloodwork up early rather than wait a week, it might be revealing.

Yes, I am very concerned also, which is why I've been going to such great lengths to encourage it. I'll ask about getting it done tomorrow.

Well, I got her in today, and we agreed the blood test should be done, and based on the results, she would get some fluid, as she did not appear dehydrated much. She did get fluid.
Her kidney levels were way high again, and the Vet said they are not able to function properly any more, and she may need fluid therapy a couple times per week to flush the toxins out. I guess this is kidney failure? They said I might be able to give her fluids at home...how hard is this?
She didn't eat this morn, or drink, but they got her to eat a can of a/d while there and some baby food. So I have some cans of a/d (with warnings of what it is), and instructions to mix it with l/d to see if she will eat it then. If not, then give her the a/d in moderation. It is more important that she eats, rather than what she eats now. Sigh.
My regular Vet will be back tomorrow, and I am to call him regarding fluids and whatnot.
I am grateful for a caring clinic who were sharing experiences with me...not that I wanted to hear it, but I know they care about my dog and me.

Depending on the enzyme elevations and degree of dehydration will depend on the need or frequency of fluid therapy. If the enzymes are dangerously high, then IV fluids may be best initially, until the enzymes are within normal range. Sub-q fluids at home are not difficult, but if you've never done this, I would ask your vet to show you and you can practice for a couple minutes in her presense...also have her show you how to connect the line set to the bag so that if you are to give fluids on a regular basis at home you'll know how to change fluid bags. Your vet can give you a client handout that explains renal disfunction, symptoms to watch for, etc.
If Winnie doesn't take to the L/D within a couple days, ask your vet about K/D or an equivalent with another veterinary diet.

What a week...think I will set up a cot in the Vet's office! She got fluids again yesterday, along with more bloodwork. When I called today, he said her kidney enzymes were VERY high (BUN 69 Creatinin 4.2). Pancreatic enzymes were approaching normal. So she will have fluids daily until Sat. She ate fairly well last night and this morning. I do have one more can of K/D to try tonight.
He did mention the possibility of something else going on, such as cancer, and to think about exploratory surgery if we can get her to turn the corner. He could do it, but doesn't have the expertise to fix it, so he would want to refer her to UGA Vet School. I dunno, that seems rather extreme to me right now.
