Cat licked flea & tick drops

Post by mimz »

Please help Toddy! Daughter put Hartz Flea control on Toddy & he licked it. Called poison control - they're not sure what to do. Can anyone help me to make sure my Toddy will be okay?

OTC flea products can be harmful for your pet. Please ask your Vet for a safet flea product. See this thread for more info...

Hopefully, you've gotten your kitty to a vet by now??? If not, go NOW.

Did your daughter read the package instructions? Which poison control center did you call? If it was the National Animal Poison Control Center, they DO know what to tell owners and they would tell you to bathe the cat with dawn dish soap and lukewarm water, and get her to an emergency vet ASAP. So call a vet for instructions immediately and get kitty to the vet NOW.

Do not EVER buy over-the-counter flea medications and NEVER buy Hartz products, they are dangerous and can and have been lethal to cats, all over-the-counter products have this risk. Your vet can recommend the safest flea products, which are Advantage, Frontline or Revolution.

Just Say NO!

I agree with Traci- we used that topical flea drop product from HARTZ and our cat almost died. Since then I have never used any of their products. I even think there was something in the news about them knowing it was toxic and not recalling it...but not sure. Maybe someone here knows.
Glad your cat is ok.

Mompaws, since the flea applications used by Hartz are not considered "drugs", which would be under the regulation of the FDA, they can get away with being under the guise of the EPA instead, for pesticide/insecticide use. The EPA has been less than cooperative with consumer/pet owner complaints against Hartz' products, they have never given Hartz any regulatory action whatsoever. (save for the fiasco nearly two decades ago about the Blockade use in pets...Hartz paid heavy fines and were required to pull Blockade off the market, but two years later, they reintroduced it with false, misleading and shady labelling)

To date, the EPA has yet to show it actually regulates (or cares) about Hartz' product ingredients and their shady business practices. Hartz continues to produce and sell dangerous products....it took over 5 years for the EPA to "recommend" Hartz quit producing the permethrin-like products -- only as recently as a couple months ago did Hartz come out with a new product, and of course, the ingredients are "proprietary", meaning pet owners have no way of knowing what's in them.

The "voluntary" cease of distribution of the older products hasn't solved anything, those products are still on the market, despite the fact they were supposed to be completely removed from stores and warehouses by March of 2006. (they signed an agreement with the EPA to this effect, the EPA has not followed up on this).

Not only does Hartz include harmful and lethal ingredients in their products, they have continually waylaid the EPA's regulatory status. The EPA is equally as responsible for not taking regulatory action.

That is darn scarey, Traci...thanks for posting that, as it needs to be said.

Lo-o-ong time ago before I knew better, I would use a flea collar on my cat. The first thing he did was take it off, but never said why. Now that I have a computer, I have learned a lot..maybe too much at times..LOL
