Owlie's up for her second surgery today

Post by upsun »

Hello,
I had posted sometime back under Feline URI that won't go away-please help. Well, a lot has happened since then. The time finally presented itself to take Owlie to the A&M small animal hospital in college station (eight hours away). After a CT Scan they were certain that she had a very large polyp on the top of her mouth. It was so big that thay needed to actually cut through the soft palette to get to it. The surgery was a success and they tell me she is actually breathing through her nose now! The polyp was completely benign. She's having a second surgery today on her ear. Part of the inner ear has been destroyed and they will need to take out what is destroyed and do some reconstruction. If all goes well, I will hopefully be picking her up on Sunday. The doctor told me that she wouldn't have survived much longer without the surgery. I can't wait to see her! They tell me that her head tilt may not go away but that doesn't matter to me, I just want her to be healthy and happy. My bill is going to be whopping, but this is such a huge relief (to me and owlie). I will post again after picking her up. Thanks again to Tracy for all the help on this.

I'm thrilled to hear this. Too bad the other vets couldn't get a handle on this months ago.

Keep us updated if you can. I'm certain Owlie is feeling 100% better, I can only imagine the distress she went through.

Uh, this is so good to hear! Bless you, upsun, for going through with this!

And my deepest respect to the vets in the US who are able to do these tricky op's. Inner ear reconstruction in a cat ... here (India) we could only dream of such a thing ...

All the best to the lucky kitty! :)

well, owlie's doing fine after her second and last surgery-i wish i could say the same for her surgeon. they called me yesterday and said that she bit the surgeon right before surgery and now due to the state law (she hasn't been vaccinated), they have to keep her there for 10 days! :( what a fiasco this has turned out to be! i just want to bring her home already. they said they would try to get the extra expense paid for, which i really hope they do. oh well. they say she has made herself at home there in ICU, she probably did this on purpose so she wouldn't have to leave. :) they tell me that everybody is bonding with her. looks like my next update won't be for 10 more days. :(

What a fierce little lady, eh? Well, at least it sounds like she's doing alright.

I don't really understand what is supposed to transpire in 10 days?

Ash, the concern is rabies. Each state here has it's own quarantine laws, but if an unvaccinated animal bites a human, depending on the state's laws, the animal could be euthanized for testing for rabies, or quarantined for a certain amount of time past the rabies incubation period. 10 days is a reasonable quarantine period (depending on the situation: owned animals who have not been explosed to rabies are less likely to be quarantined for a long period of time, as opposed to a stray animal who's vaccination history or exposure is unknown)...some states require up to 80+ days. If no clinical signs of illness indicating rabies symptoms develops during quarantine, the animal is released to the owner, with of course, a strong recommendation or requirement to vaccinate prior to release. In Owlie's case, she's been too ill for vaccinations, and should not receive a rabies vaccination until she has recovered completely from her illness/surgery.

So sorry you have to wait ten days to get her back, but that's great that the surgery went well. As for the head tilt, she shouldn't be affected by it. My Sals has a slight tilt from Vestibular Disease from a severe inner ear infection. It doesn't hamper her at all; she just looks determined when she walks, LOL!
I hope the ten days will fly by and that she will come home happy and well!
Kitty kisses,
Debbie
