Re: Anal glands

It's an anal gland problem. The vet already emptied the glands twice but not all came out.

I'm not using this jelly, gave it back already.

Her stools are normal apart from yesterday when she had diarrhea from the dewormer. But that was to be expected. They are never white. Her rectum looks fine actually, not red or raw or swollen.

None of the vets here are anywhere close to what I would call good. No point going to another one - I have tried them all.

If the gland was not fully emptied that can still cause scooting and problems. There might be an infection starting. I think the dr. should atleast try to express them again to make sure they are completely emptied and think of an antibiotic.

Do you remember the color of the secretion when your vet expressed the anal glands? Normally, should have been clear or brownish-yellow....if it was dark brown or greenish, then this could indicate infection, which would require antibiotics.

If the secretion was normal and there is no infection, then hold off on any medications. Since she had diarrhea, this may be one reason for the continued scooting, as in her trying to clean the area herself. Again, apply a soft damp warm cloth to the area once or twice a day. Don't manipulate the area at all, just apply a clean damp cloth to gently cleanse the area.

I wouldn't give the betamethazone, nor the xylocaine.

The secretion was dark brown. I asked him for antibiotics but he said he wants to wait a little longer.

Mamaof4, I appreciate your input but we have had him empty the glands twice and he said there was a little left in one gland which wouldn't come out, and she was screaming and struggling too much to try more. He said he could only do it under sedation and I don't want that. I described all this on the first page of this thread. Thanks anyway! :)

Well, with the continued scooting, she is at risk for further infection (i.e., dirt and debris entering)...so if there's any chance the vet could come to your home, maybe this would be easier for her, since she'd be in her own familiar environment. Muzzle her and ask the vet to be quick about expressing her anal glands, then ask for clavamox or amoxicillin, but NOT in high doses (your vet has trouble with that)

He did it at our home before too.

Okay, if she doesn't stop tonight I ask him again to come tomorrow.

She is getting better! She has only been scooting once after she had a stool yesterday - before she'd do it all the time, again and again ... she definitely is better. I'm so glad!

Thanks Traci and Mamaof4 for your advice! I've been cleaning her and maybe that helped.

Have a nice Sunday! :)

Good to hear, but do keep an eye on her. Some dogs have problematic and reoccuring anal gland problems so you'll want to monitor her for reoccurance.
