Ugh! Tick

Post by momPaws »

Am asking for ppl to share their experiences with me for tick control...re the use of either Frontline Plus or K9 Advantix. Honey does not have fleas, but a big old ugly tick got her yesterday (I killed it and removed- the right way of course).

If you have used either of these and had good results pls let me know. Thanks!

I like the Frontline Plus for our dogs, and it is also what my mom uses on hers...and years ago before things like Frontline and Advantage were available...and it seemed there was only collars and powders...both of which I detest...(and I KNOW Traci will get on me for this...but it worked... )

I would put 1 Tablespoon of white vinegar in a gallon of water and use that for their drinking water...I never did deal with fleas or ticks on my dogs...they did not taste the vinegar, but it was in thier system enough that the little biting critters did not like to be on them and left them alone...

Traci...do you know why this would have worked...and was it "safe" ?!
They never had any negative side affects that I was aware of...

I don't know "if" it worked, Tambrey (i.e., anecdotal). As for safe, as long as it was apple cider vinegar, probably not a problem, but I don't think I'd do that long term.

The collars used to work because they had permethrins and organophosphates in them, not that they were safe in ANY way, and of course, some idiot manufacturers still use them

Ok, this is my dilema... Advantix also has permethrins. And tho it repels is it worth the risk? Frontline does not as far as I know.

Frontline: fipronil, (s)-methoprene

Advantage: imidacloprid

Advantix: imidacloprid, permethrin

They all have the same method of action for killing existing fleas, halting larvae development and killing ticks. As far as I know, Advantix claims their product repels ticks better, but it's probably due to the permethrin. Dogs can tolerate small concentrations of permethrins as opposed to cats (which cannot, at all), although permethrins are not without risk.

I'd stick with FrontlinePlus.

I'm with you, Traci. Honey is an older dog and as such perhaps not as strong an immune system, etc.

(Besides on a state pesticide site it says that a property of permethrin is a slight ability to repel...not worth it to me.)
