Canned cat food for urinary tract health
Canned cat food for urinary tract health
Hello everyone, I'm interested in others' opinions and experiences with low pH/S food for cats' urinary tract health. Currently we are using Veterinary Diets Eukanuba low P/h dry food and sometimes adding water. Any recommendations for other commerical brand canned foods besides the canned food at the vet's? Thanks for any help!
Re: Canned cat food for urinary tract health
You should be discussing this with your vet, because if you have a cat(s) with urinary tract problems, FLUTD or crystal formation (struvites), you need to follow your vet's advise for the prescription diet. Your cat(s) needs are individual, and your vet is the only one who can advise you based on exam, history, health status, followup urinalysis, symptoms or reoccurance, and response to treatment and the diet prescribed.
Commercial diets generally are not appropriate for FLUTD or struvite dissolution, or for cats with a history/reoccurance of FLUTD, they are not formulated properly for dissolution of crystals or managing the condition. If you alter the diet in a cat with urinary tract health problems, or switch to a commercial diet, you will put your kitty at risk for a reoccurance.
Heed your vet's advice, I'm sure he knows what he is doing regarding the prescribed diet, per your cat's needs.

There are several different kinds of canned cat food that address the low pH for urinary health. At first we did science diet, but it is pricey. I can't remember the brand we use now, but Max does fine with it. He had a severe urinary blockage last July, and *hopefully* will continue to do so. You can buy all of those brands at a place like PetGo.
Good luck!

I couldn't make heads or tails out of that PetGo site, so maybe I got the wrong site.
We have a dog with urinary problems, and are using an Rx IVD food. Yes, the Rx foods are more expensive, but important for good health. None of them can be bought in a grocery or pet store...you have to get them from your Vet or with an Rx for them. They are lower in protein and I think it is magnesium that is higher (don't quote me on that). The food is not appropriate for an otherwise healthy animal. Like Traci said, go with what your Vet suggests. The alternative will be much more expensive!
If your Vet only carries Hill's or Euk, he should be able to order another Rx food, if that is what you prefer. In addition to IVD (Royal Canin), Purina and Wysong have an Rx line.
