Questions on diseases dogs can get.
Re: Questions on diseases dogs can get.
I think there are a lot of good animal owners out there, and most can't afford to take their animal in to the vets any time their animal sneezes. I think it is a bit much to expect them too. There is help for those who can't afford all those vet bills. But they are not everywhere. So do I think that should stop those who can't afford the bills to not get the animal. No, that is where you come up with so many poor stray animals that have no one to take care of them. Because there are not enough rich people out there to take them in. I take my animals in once a year like I said to get a check up. I know I can take care of them at home if need be, for most things. And yes those things that I can't do, I go to the vet. But those are few and far in between. I am a responsible pet owner; I give my animals the best food I can find. And I take care of their other needs with products that are known for being good for them. So no I don't feel bad about not taking them into the vet as often as others think you should. I have had animals around me all my life. And most unless of some freak accident, lived to be quite old and happy. I think the real care comes in what you feed them, and how you take care of them at home. Though I think you gave some very good information to look into. I am sorry but I do have to disagree with you on the topic of vet’s verses taking care of them yourself.
Re: Questions on diseases dogs can get.
You asked questions about what canine diseases you should be concerned with, given your particular situation and your dogs' environment and risks.
We answered those questions.
You then stated your desire to vaccinate your animals yourself, with vaccines not carried or administered by your vet. Your (I assume, based on your posts) sole reason being costs.
I then explained the inherent risks with such an approach, as well as the importance of your relationship with your vet so that he can determine their individual needs as they apply, per physical examination and other factors that need to be taken into consideration. Again, per age, health, environment, risk factors that all vets take into consideration before ever giving a vaccination.
If you plan on vaccinating yourself, be prepared for any of those risks.
People don't have to be rich to afford proper health and wellness, nor regular exams. The costs are justified, since if you forego regular exams prior to vaccination administration, the risks are greater, and the costs may end up being greater in the long term, for diagnostics, treatment, etc. Likewise, your vet may even suggest your dogs may not need a particular vaccine, based on his physical assessment of your dogs and all the other factors taken into consideration. That would be up to you and him together.
Again, you need to be discussing your questions and concerns with your vet. He is the ONLY one who can advise you accordingly, based on (I repeat) age, health, environment, risk factors, etc. We can only advise or make recommendations, the best approach is to work with your vet.

And as I put in there before. I will be going into the vets for a yearly visit. And that is when he/she can let me know what shots to give. But there is no reason why I can't ask on here for advise as to what is out there.
