Cat Toys in the water dish!

Post by tignor »

My cat, Stella, loves her toys. I make her crochet mice with catnip, or her snuggle bugs, or even milk rings. But we can't give them to her anymore. Last month I woke up and Stella was at her water dish crying her head off and looking at me. Her snuggle bug was taking a bath in the water dish. I squeezed the water out and put it on the sink to dry, and went downstairs. 5 minutes later, I hear a thump and here she comes, running downstairs with the soaking wet snuggle bug in her mouth. Well, we took it from her, and then noticed she was doing it with other toys.

She's been toy-less for a couple of weeks, but today I gave her a snuggle bug again, thinking she'd have forgotten about the water dish. DH asked me when I came hom how Stella got the snuggle bug, said it was next to the dish but yes, it was soaking wet.

Stella is a 1 1/2 year old tortoiseshell and fascinated with water. And she loves her toys, she's extremely active and I hate taking them from her but don't know what to do. Any clue why she's doing this? We are probally going to have to just give her a toy and take the water dish up for like, an hour...but still, is she trying to wash them? I don't get it??? Any help would be appreciated.

My cats do this with their furry toy mice or plastic jingle balls. Don't know why but I figure when they realize they want their water fresh or their toys dry, they'll stop it.

Maybe someone else on the board has a better explanation or reasoning.

I don't why some cats do this (heard about it a couple of times), but Tignor, don't worry too much about it. Don't look at it as a problem but more as a quirk. Apart from things getting a bit wet, there is no harm, is there. If you want to prevent your carpets etc becoming wet, do as you said, give her her toys for an hour or two while you keep the water dish up.

If she loves water so much you might want to make sure the toilet lid is down at all times and the bath tub isn't unsupervised when full.

Try moving the waterdish to a new location. See what happens.

Hi
I have 5 cats in the house and I often times find their toys in the water bowl. A few years ago the "big thing" was to put them into the toilet! Yea.....well.....that ended when one night someone used the toilet and flushed it and a huge black fur covered mouse toy had been in the toilet....it got flushed as well and it promptly clogged the toilet causing a big overflow and ensuing mess!!!!! We learned to keep the lid down simply to keep the toys and little paws out (plus it looks better and ends that battle with the men to put the seat down.....now everyone puts everything down!

Wow, it's been a little while since I first posted.

Stella still does it, but we've since gotten her hooked on milk rings, which are waterproof. She no longer gets catnip mousies. They promptly get dunked.

I think...she plays with her food as if it's prey, smacking it all over the kitchen, pouncing on it and then eating it. I think she may think her toys, also prey, belong in the food or water dish. She can retrieve them from the food without getting her paws wet, but not the water dish, so she leaves them there.
