Rabies vax question

Is the 3 yr vaccine different from the 1 yr? I have heard differing opinions. Some say it is the same thing.

Another thing, when we first moved here 25+ years ago, we used the military Vet facilities, and they used a 3 yr vax for Bear. Because they don't treat medical problems, or didn't at the time, we had to go to a local Vet, who didn't recommend the 3 yr vax. Granted, that was a long time ago, but why the difference?

I am getting all the dogs on 3 yr vax, as they are older...and this same Vet is OK with it now.

Depends on the manufacturer. If it is only registered/liscensed as a 1-year vaccine, chances are it is because the manufacturer has only recommended the duration for one year. If you have a vet who utilizes a 3-year rabies vaccine, by all means, opt for it.

Also, this will depend on the dog, age, health condition, environmental risks, as well as the vet's preference.

Thanks, I knew you would give a straight answer. This Vet actually doesn't give the 3 yr unless you are knowlegeable enough to ask for it. So I imagine it falls into the "Vet preference" realm.

It may fall under the "vet's preference", although I imagine many vets take into consideration the client as well as the patient. For example, the vet may have a client that is not a regular client, or a client who is not often compliant, so he may recommend a 1-year vaccine so that he can ensure the patient gets a yearly exam (remember, many clients only take their pets to the vet when vaccines are required, or when there may be an emergency).

Well-l, seeing as I am in there once a month for a UA, he doesn't have to worry about never seeing my dog...LOL!
