doing dogs nails

Post by oconnorjoy »

Can someone help me? My big pom is absolutely terrified of getting his nails trimmed. It's getting impossible to do them. I've had him since he was a puppy and it's always been a strugle...he's never had a bad experience with having them bleed. He's a very well behaved dog who is very gentle and obedient otherwise. Does anyone have any suggestions on how to get him to calm down and let me trim them?

Choose a time when he is most relaxed and comfortable, and only do a couple at a time...if he struggles or stresses, cease what you're doing and try again later. Reward him with a special treat or playtime activity after a nail trim so he associates the procedure with a good experience.

I have a 13 year old that never made it easy to do nail trims. As Tracy said, do one or two at a time. Make it a relaxed incident, quick as can be, and then cuddle and treat. Years back I had a large male who was resistant. I laid on him on the bed, and talked nicely. He couldn`t really get up, but wasn`t uncomfortable. Finally, after several of these "teaching" sessions, he improved and accepted.

We have to take Sammie in to get his done...it takes a person to hold him and someone else to trim them...maybe in time we will do it at home...but right now I am just more comfortable paying the shop $5 to do it and be done without us being the nasty ones...
