Body Lice..

Post by Kallie »

I have a rescue pup I have taken in (7-8 weeks old) she has a bad case of body lice, confirmed by vet. He has me treating her with "Pyrethrin" 6 treatments total, every 2 days. Well I have read that the eggs hatch every 21 days, so my question would have to be should she be done again in 21 days? Or are these treatments here enough to kill both lice and eggs? How effective are these treatment also, she has already had after today 4 treatments, is it save to say the body lice is dead now??

I have also been told/read two different things, that it IS contagious to humans, and it is NOT contagious to humans. Can anyone tell me which is true :?:

I guess I am looking for the low down on body lice, as far as cure rate with treatments, how contagious is it to humans if it even is, and also to my other dogs.

Thanks

You didn't say what type of lice they were. Most are host specific -- i.e. they only infect canids. (Dogs, wolves and coyotes)

Here are some links.

Hope these help

I have no idea what kind they are, I did not take the puppy to the vet, and the vet is closed today to ask. :( She still has white specs on her, and I also noticed a few brownish colored specs too. I guess this is why I am asking in general how effective the treatments are. As I cannot tell if this is just dead lice on her or not. It seems from reading it does not matter what type of lice, as treatment is the same for both.

Perhaps this is common to continue seeing the white specs even after treatments? Just curious if anyone might know this..

Thanks for your reply

If you are giving the treatments in the form of bath w/ dip then the dead lice should go down the drain. \:D/

Live lice cling on for dear life!

Well darn then! I did use a lice comb tonight, and got allot out using this. However she STILL has specs on her. She has 2 more treatments, and then she goes back to the vet for a check.

Skeptic I just noticed you are from Laplace. I am in Picayune:) Lived in New Orleans all my life though, moved here about 6 years ago. Wanted that country life and horses..LOL I still have family in New Orleans, Kenner, Hammond and Luling. Small world:)

It is. I was born in New Orleans and raised in Metairie. My family is all over the place now, though most stayed in the Southeastern part of the state. (Folsum and Amite areas) I have a niece living in Iowa and a nephew who is carreer air force living in N. Carolina. He is in Bagdad we think.

I was in Picayune on Friday to deliver a dog to a rescue group. We meet at the Chevron Station off of Exit 6 in Picayune to exchange dogs. I'll often eat there after the dog(s) are exchanged. They have good Fride chicken. The rescue person is located about an hour's drive North of Picayune.

Little Paws Rescue -- Affiliated with Small Paws rescue, but is different in that it is an all breed rescue.

I live about 10 minutes away from that gas station. That is the exit to get off to go to my house, I am in the country, not city. My brother owns a eye doctor clinic in Amite and Hammond. My sister is a nurse at childrens hospital in the cancer unit in New Orleans, and my BIL is a doctor that teaches med students at Tulane, they live uptown. The rest of my family his here in Picyune also. My hubbies family however is in Kenner, Metairie and Luling.

I have heard of that rescue, however have never dealt with them. I take in puppies only, then my local shelter when they are old enough, brings them to Petsmart in Covington, or now Slidell for adoption day. The girl I have now is from a stray dog that had a litter in my woods. All her litters mates were found a week earlier, she came up by herself to my neighbors house. Poor girl is terrified of people, plus the body lice so she will be here at least a month before adoptable.

If you ever have a litter of puppies that need rescuing let me know. I only take in puppies, as it is much easier for me as I have 4 dogs of my own. My only condition is they have to be tested for parvo prior to being sent here.
