What will you be watching for instead; Blizzards, floods, tornados or earthquakes?

None of the above

Actually where I'm going does have floods, but they would have to be of biblical proportion to get where I'm going to be as it's pretty high up...tornados are rare, blizzards are rare and earthquakes are not impossible but usually just shake things a little.

Thanks Karen! I'll be sure to check that out. We will be traveling through NC, but won't be staying there. We would be staying in SC as it is about halfway.:

We've stayed in SC with no problems, but, each hotel is different, so, it would probably be a good idea to check anyway.

I can't believe I won't be watching hurricanes with you next summer

I'm curious too, which natural disaster(s) is/are common in your new area? If SC is half way, I suspect you're moving into an area where snow and ice storms may be a problem. And don't be too sure about getting awary from those hurricanes, they can cause some pretty nasty storms, floods, and tornados way north of where they come ashore. !! As for the snow and ice/freezing rain - at least if the power goes out in the summer we won't freeze to death!!

Now now...no reason to be jealous just because I'm moving away from hurricane central!!

I'll be living in Virginia...right off the Blue Ridge Parkway. Beautiful country!! the last hurricane to affect them with any intensity was Hugo in 1989. One of them last year did spawn tornados up there, but not in the area I'm going to. Tornados seem to like flat land better for some reason. Flash floods are a problem sometimes, but the only way they would affect us is to wash out the roads so we can't get out. Our place, once we get it built, will be up on a hill..and we have a canoe Forest fires of course could affect us and I'm not sure my eardrums can take the cicadas when they decide to come out!! Snow and ice happen, but it's rarely a huge problem...not like it would be in say upstate NY. We plan on putting in a whole house generator so that if anything did happen we'd be covered

The biggest problem for me is going to be culture shock I'm moving from a major metropolitan area to a village of about 1200...and I'm gonna be 17 miles from the closest grocery store. At least there is a city nearby though. So it's kind of like I get the best of both worlds. Country living with city stuff within a 30 minute drive

And I forgot sinkholes (which are a major problem here in Central FL, so, TinaB is leaving those too!)

Tina - sounds like a lovely area. You will definitely get lots of snow in the VA mountains. Stock up on supplies for the Winter - 17 miles will be very long in snow and ice. Is it an area large enough to have snow plows? I lived in Hampton, and there were no plows there because it snowed so infrequently. My husband grew up in Springfield (just outside DC), and they had plows, but the didn't get to all the smaller roads.

I lived in a small town when I was 'down south' in Palm Beach county, but it had about 12,000 people, not 1200. We were about an hour from 'civilization', and it wasn't bad at all.
