Mabel is one itchy poochie pup!!
Mabel is one itchy poochie pup!!
Ok so Mabel is on a prescription food ... ID. And she is one ictchy mutt.. not happy about this by the way but she's gettin a LOT better from it and soon she will be back on her normal food.. in the process now of switching her back. I'm not sure it if it the food or time of year but I have heard that you can give a dog cod liver oil and that will help... is this true and if so.. how much do I give her and how? She weighs about 60 pounds.
Ok Ok Ok.. so this is not the right forum for this I'm sure... so sue me. You wont get much and I never read the health place.
Any suggestions? Comments? What...
Thanks!

I don't know if dogs will eat cod liver oil...will defer to someone else on that. My Vet gave me some fish oil capsules for Java's itchies. It was a gel cap which I cut open and sprinkled the oil on her food. You can get them at WalMart or a drug store...I think salmon oil is the best...one per day.
Re: Mabel is one itchy poochie pup!!
The important thing, Kev, is finding out what is causing the itchiness. Food allergies, contact dermatitis, flea allergy dermatitis, ? What has your vet said? If food allergies are suspect, it probably isn't a good idea to put her back on a food that may be suspect.
You can supplement with EFA's, but try to use those recommended by your vet (since many health food stores can't be trusted for quality of product or ingredients). I would suggest DermCaps from your vet.

Crystal is on DermCaps and I've found that they help a lot with itching and dry flaky skin.

Her allergy is to beef. The food she has been on is a allergy whatever food that she does ok on. ther prescription stuff is what, i think, is causin her this. she has been to the vet for this but a long time ago.
I think I will try the dermcap thingie......

I/D is designed for gastrointestinal problems, so don't know why your vet prescribed it. D/D would be a better choice. Neither contain beef.

Ok so I know I'm gonna spell this wrong but Davet will be able to read it that way anyway.. she has had a bout with pancriatits. Hey.. that looks like it may be close to right! Been on the id for about a month or so I guess.. maybe longer. She is eating now.. she was not before cause of this.. and there is spring in her step again. She has always been an itchy mutt but its buggin her now again so it bugs me too. As I say I think I;ll buy some of the dremcap thjngs and see if they help her out. It alomst seems that it is alos perhaps a time of year thing with her too...
Ok one more question.. did I post this here in the health or did it get moved... I'm hearing twlight zone music playin here....

Ok, the I/D is fine for pancreatitis.
Try adding the dermcaps until your vet gives you the OK to get her back on her normal diet. I'd suggest blood retesting to gauge response to treatment before changing back her diet (for the pancreatitis).
You've always been in the Twilight Zone, Kev, you're just in a new dimension right now.
