Winnie is funny when it comes to cleaning ears...

Post by Marty »

She has a bacterial infection, and today was the on-day when they needed cleaning. She saw me coming with the bottles and ran out the doggie door. So I went outside in the cold and got the ears cleaned. Had to wait an hour before she decided it might be safe to come in....so now I get the meds in and it is treat time.

Wish I could get a picture of her Basset eyes during this, but I don't have 4 hands...talk about a look to kill... She's forgiven me now, and laying at my side.

That's funny, Mary- wish we could have seen her. Honey runs also when I get her ear stuff....no matter how carefully I hide it - she knows. They are very smart.

oh our critters do that too...especially cats if they have earmites....oh they come to dread that treatment!!

My cat Tigger quite a few years ago got an infection in his nether regions and the vet had to shave his long hair bald back there to help the rash heal...I had to spray him with Gentivin (sp) daily until it was healed...I had to sneak taht bottle in behind my back and just sit and watch TV and wait for him to walk by adn give him a quick squirt...elsewise he would hide for days!...Oh how he jumped when I did that, but I could not get him sprayed any other way...

The last time I had to get that med for a cat, the vet gave me a ointment tube, much easier to apply...

Speaking of ears...I just got home from the vet with Sammie...our little doxi...lastnight when I was rubbing his ears like he likes, he let out a yelp...and I had noticed him shaking his head off and on all day...
He was still shaking his head alot today, and just seems not himself, so we got in this afternoon...

The vet cleaned the right ear, and Sammie was in heaven...smiling and his hind leg was going...but the vet got the Q-tip stick barely into the other ear, and he yelped and turned away and it took 3 attempts to get it out of his ear because he kept turning/snapping so fast...

So for now, he sprayed some Genticin (sp) spray into his ear, and he also checked his teeth...they do need a good cleaning, but he could not see anything in there that could be causing pain in or around the ear...

However, I made an appointment to get his teeth cleaned and they will also be able to look further into that ear and see what is going on...

He also got his nails clipped while we were there, because he is such a big whiny baby about me doing it at home...the vet said when they are doing his teeth and ear, they will also do his nails better and get them clipped/filed down really good...he just sort of did a "get by" job on them for now since Sammie was so owly already...
Sammie never got his nails trimmed on a regular basis before, so he does not care for it now...

I missed this somehow, but you have me a bit confused. I have some Gentocin spray, but it was prescribed for a skin problem...never heard of it being used for an ear problem...

I wouldn't use it other than as prescribed, but Davet or Traci, can you comment on this?

the vet gave him a shirt squirt in case he had an irritation in his ear (scratch from a cat) that we could not see, and Sammie would not let us see...because his ear was definitely sensitive, and he did yelp the day before when he was playing around with the kitten...and it was not long after that when I noticed him shaking his head...it may be a coincidence that I noticed him shaking his head after that, but I had not noticed it before...

I am not doing this at home...

and he will be getting a teeth cleaning, ear checking and nail clipping session next week...hopefully we can figure out what his issue is...

Gentamicin otic is frequently used for dogs (i.e. canine otitis).
