two new kittens (pictures) *56k beware*

Post by remax realtor »

Hey everyone new here. I bought cody about 1 month ago (tigermarkings), and i just bought the second one yesterday from a local shelter.

cody is very playful. He has more energy than the sun.

The new kitten (no name yet) is very calm and relaxed. He plays a little, but i still think hes adjusting to his new home. At first it had me worried, because he would just lay in my lap for over an hour without moving at all. hes very sweet. I could pet him for hours and he loves every minute of it. Im guessing by his markings that he has siamese mixed in??? Are they known to be this calm? cody is a little territorial and hissed at him a few times, but its getting a little better. Any advice for making this process a little easier. When cody hisses it does not phase the cat at all. He acts like hes not even there.

The kitten has his own litter box, food/water dish, and his own room to sleep in at night. Is it ok to lock him in his own room at night to keep the other cat out, or should I let him run about? I wanted ot keep him locked up until they got along. Im just trying to find the best way to get cody to like him so i dont have to worry about leaving them alone. Throughout the day while im home they are both out and allowed to run around freely. Heres a couple pics.

Hi- couldn't open your pics...maybe I can help you post them so everyone can see them. You hit Img up above, the paste the url of the picture, then hit Img again (which will have a slash in it automatically the second time)

The pictures are opening now. Very beautyful cats! Both of them!

8 weeks is a little early to be seperated from the mother, although I feel he looks older than that. Did they get checked out by your vet? Is Cody vaccinated already?

In kittens that young it is usually not a problem to get them to like each other. After a couple of initial hisses and sorting out the 'ranking', they should be fine. If they don't get into serious fights there is no reason to lock them up at night. But since you had the new one only for a day or two, it might be a good idea to keep him in the room over night for maybe a week, just to let him get adjusted to the feel and sounds of your place and help him settle in.

You can help both to get used to each other by rubbing a small towel on the them, then rub the other one with it, to exchange smells. Also, play with them together, engage them in interactive play. No kitten can resist that.

You might get problems later on though, as they are both males. When they start to mature there could be real fights, at which point only castration will solve the problem.

Is your appartment safe for cats? No poisonous plants, household cleaners, medicines left out? Also look around for little balls, stones, strings, rubber bands, cables etc, they could swallow. Small kittens will play with and chew on ANYTHING!

Good luck, and thanks for sharing!

Also, they will chase their tails like it's their job. Izzy is currently chasing her tail on the couch cushion next to me; I'm getting whipped about the face with tails and limbs, and I'm thanking the Lord that her nails aren't sharp enough to damage the fabric. Just you wait, cat, next vet visit? SOFTPAWS. Heh heh.

Your kittens are adorable, sir. May they bring you many years of love and entertainment.

Can open two of them now, other asks for download.

If these pics are recent (within days), it appears the kittens are old enough to be together and do not need to be seperated, but watch them closely and supervise to make sure Cody is not too rough on your new kitten.

Cody looks like a Himalayan...your kitten may possibly be part siamese, but more grey tabby.

thanks for the tips. Cody was playing pretty rough with the new kitten yesterday. When i turned my back he jumped on the other cat and started to bite him on his back. Not hard enough to draw blood, but it made the new cat yelp a little bit. What would be the best way to displine him when he does something like that? I pulled him off and gave him a stern NO.

This morning i thought i would bring them both out and share some treats the shelter gave us. Well cody was growling lightly almost the whole time the kitten was eating, so that didnt work out very well. I even put them about 2-3 feet from each other when they were eating. I will try the towel idea to see if that helps. I wish the new kitten would stand up for himself a little more instead of letting cody jump on him. When cody was biting him, the kitten just layed there and didnt care. If i lock cody up in his room and let the new one run free, he will explore the whole house and be more playful. When cody is out he stays on the couch with me. Also the kitten does not chew his treats. He was swallowing them whole! he started to choke on one this morning, but he coughed it up. Hes not gonna get anymore until he starts chewing his food.

Sorry about the pics. It wont let me attach them unless its an approved site. Thats why i had to paste them.

cody had his first round of shots before i bought him. Hes going in next week for his next shots. The new kitten will get his within 2 weeks. Then I will have both kittens fixed at the same time. Whats the best age to get this done at?
Also before i bought the cats i was gonna have both of them declawed. Now i changed my mind. My g/f does not agree. She thinks they should be declawed. Well it doesnt matter what she wants, because its my house :D If she wants them declawed, she can make my mortgage payment.

Also ive heard the word tabby quite a bit. What does it mean?

I declawed one years ago and vowed to never do it again!
I have all of my cats trained to do "Clippy claws"...I use dhuman toenail clippers as they are easier to grip...I hold the cat in my lap, sort of sitting with their back against my chest, and hold a paw and talk to them about clippy claws and how they will not get caught in screens and on furniture and carpets...it takes some getting used to, and at first, you can only maybe do one or two claws at a time...but now my Gypsy will sit and extend her claws for me and purrrrr the entire time...

Have your vet show you the proper way to clip their claws the next time you have them in to see him/her...

as for training, I use a water bottle...I have one in each room for easy reach, and any time a cat is doing something they should not, they get a squirt on the haunches!! If you can NOT let them see that it is you (or your girlfriend) squirting the water, they will associate the stream of water with the activity...
For example...I have a cockatiel in a hanging cage on a stand...when we are not home, of course he is in another room, but he likes to be where the activity is...the cats think the cage squirts water at them, because I would let them sit right there and look all they wanted, but as soon as apaw touched the cage, they got squirted...now I can go in and find 6 cats laying in a semi-circle on the living room floor watching the bird!!

For my pictures, I like (free) photobucket...you can post quite a few images there...edit them for size if they are too big, sort them into albums, share them with friends, and they give you the proper URL tags below each picture, so no guessing or remembering! :)
