Gray Baby Feral
Gray Baby Feral
Well...the latest feral kitty I have been working on...with the help of Sammie the doxie, has crossed over the bridge
She has NEVER gone near the road, and I do not know what inspired her to do so this evening, but when DH and I returned from bowling, we saw a kitty in the road (we live hear a busy highway) and he went to look...it was our baby...she was maybe 6 months old, a beautiful white with gray splotches and the sweetest white face with a gray spot on her head and another down the middle of her nose, and big gray spots on her back....
when we would try to get near, she would run and hide behind a one gallon size perennial plant, figuring we could not see her there...she wanted to be touched, and would roll over and expose her belly, but when we would get within 3 feet, she was up and running to hide...
She finally let Sammie near enough to play the other day, he was on his retractable leash, and I just kept "reeling him in" and she would follow...she laid down and he was using his nose to rub her belly and she was in heaven, so I slowly reached down and was able to touch her for a moment before she realized it was a human hand...I figured if I did this every day, I could eventually catch her and get her to a good safe home...
DH touched her one last time to lay her to rest this evening...at least she did not suffer and it happened fast...there was not a drop of blood anywhere around her, so we know she was hit hard enough and fast enough to die instantly...but it is still hard to deal with...
Please pray for a safe journey for this little girl...

Oh, how sad! I'm so sorry! I wish her a safe journey .... sweet little kitten, now you can play safely.
Thank Tambrey for caring.

Re: Gray Baby Feral
Thanks Ash...sometimes I wish I did not care so much, because I always end up hurting...but I cannot stop caring...when we stop caring, we may as well stop living because then our hearts would become so hard, how could we ever experience the joys of living as well...
I know she is at peace now...but I sure will miss her romping around just out of Sammie's reach tomorrow when we go on our walk...or peeking out at me from behind the Anise Hyssop plant...or trying to snatch a piece of food when I put it out and always try to touch a shoulder or tail as they come to eat...
Her brother, a black and white kitten, looks lost and lonely tonight...I hope he can find someone to snuggle down with...they always slept together...I have gone out these past few chilly mornings to find them and one other feral kitten from another litter all snuggled in a pile together...but I did not see that one this evening either...I hope she is safe...somewhere...

I understand that so well! {{{{ Hugs }}}}Tambrey wrote:...sometimes I wish I did not care so much, because I always end up hurting...but I cannot stop caring...
Hope you find the other kitten safe! Are you gonna try finding homes for them?
Re: Gray Baby Feral
I hope she is out there tomorrow too...they will venture back and forth between our place and the neighbors, who always put food out for them as well...and the owner of the grainery does not mind then, and sometimes I see food over there too...he likes them because they catch the mice and rats who come to eat the grains!
If I can ever catch and get them tamed, I would love to find good homes for them...I do not like seeing so many ferals around, especially with winter coming on...
A few years ago, we lost all of the ferals due to disease...these ones are healthy and the ones I have managed to catch and tame are free from Feline Leukemia and other common diseases, and I want to keep them that way...but if they begin too much of the inbreeding and such, like happend before, they will weaken...

I'm sorry, Tambrey, I know your gray baby knew love and compassion in her short life......

Thank you Traci...
and to let you all know...the other one was here eating this morning, but she is injured...she is walking stiffly, on all fours still, but cannot jump...DH and I tried to catch her, but she still ran too fast for us....I will keep trying throughout the day...I have a feeling that the two were together and this one maybe got bumped...hopefully just bruised and sore...but now terrified as well as she saw her best friend and snuggle buddy cross over...

Aaaww, poor thing! I hope you'll be able to catch her or at least get a close look. Hope she'll be fine!
Re: Gray Baby Feral
I am so sorry, Tambrey... know how it hurts to lose them. There is only so much humans can do for the safety of ferals and barn cats, but somehow they get into our hearts just the same.
Re: Gray Baby Feral
Thank you E's...you are right...we get attached even though we know we take chances with these wild ones...
Here is the only picture I was ever able to get of her...it was taken Sept 15, 2005
