Vitamin C
Vitamin C
I just looked at the label of th Glucosamine/Condr. I bought for Honey and it now is supplemented with Vit. C (it is the human brand)...is it now ok to give to her...she would be getting 10 mg. of Vitamin C per day??? Would the Vit. C hurt her or possibly help her??
If Honey's kidney function is normal, excess Vitamin C should be excreted by the kidneys. That said, however, many dogs can't tolerate Vitamin C supplements. Mickey couldn't - he became almost immediately nauseous and threw-up anything with extra Vitamin C very quickly. Excess supplementation can also cause diarrhea (in humans too when too much is taken.) I know many people give their dogs supplements (both made for dogs and for humans) with large amounts of Vitamin C without any problems. I'm not sure how much the RDA for humans is (it should be on the bottle), but if this is a mega-dose for humans, it's probably too much for a medium sized dog like Honey.

well the dose for humans is 60 mg., but that is for 3 tabs and I cut one in half for her...so 10 mg....is that too much for her? With the other complications you mentioned...maybe I will try to return it...
That kinda ticks me off- they should have mentioned that they changed it and are supplementing on the front of the bottle.

Re: Vitamin C
Is she tolerating it well? I just checked, and Cosequin contains 16 mg of manganese ascorbate (a form of vitamin C), so my best guess is that 10 mg would be OK unless she is having some gastrointestinal symptoms.

Re: Vitamin C
I didn't open the bottle yet as she has some of the old formula. Am going to drugstore tomorrow to see if they have it without C and will refund new formula - that stuff is expensive! I need it too, but give it to Honey and actually it bothered my stomach without Vit. C.
Re: Vitamin C
I'm with you. If it hasn't been opened, it's probably best to exchange it. That way you haven't wasted your money.

Karen - I made out ok at the drugstore...they found one bottle without Vit C that will last me a while and exchanged it. Thanks for help - if I have to go to C in the future I will know a little should be ok. I just didn't want to push it if I didn't have to...Honey's stomach can get upset and who want that!
PS- the funny thing is that the pharmacist was surprised too to see that some bottle of the same brand were different... she did not know.

Re: Vitamin C
That's good news! It's strange that a product would change like that, but, I guess the company thought it would increase their sales. Don't you just hate it when things like that happen. I haven't noticed it much with supplement or foods, but it sure does happen with cosmetics and related items. I can't even tell you the number of times a product I was using suddenly changed - usually from a scent I liked to something I couldn't stand. (I especially hate fruity-smelling things - why would anyone want to smell like a watermelon?). Herbal Essence shampoo used to smell so fresh - almost like a freshly mown lawn, now it has a sickly sweet fruity smell - YUCK!!
