A quick update with pictures...

Post by TheSkeptic »

It has been a while since I posted some pictures, so I thought now would be a good time to annoy everyone.

The first is a little poodle that came from the city of New Orleans. He is blind and old, and was found wandering by himself in the fetid conditions of the damaged city. They do not think his owner left him there alone, but is probably one of the many that refused to leave without their pet and paid the ultimate price for their devotion. If htey did abandon him, they certainly do not deserve to get him back. His story has a happy ending

Image

Here are two of the reasons his story has a happy ending. These ladies are members of the Monadock Humane Society in New Hampshire and they came all the way down here to help with the animals of the storm. HEre they are behind a horse trailer full of wire cages holding some of our former shelter residents.

Image

Before the dogs were put in the cages, the trailer contained all sorts of goodies for our shelter. One of the Angels from New Hampshire is standing near a pile of goodies. They brought Leashes, collars, crates, wire cages, bowls and food. Also some medicines, frontline and heartworm preventative. Things we need, but the parish refuses to buy.

Image

Fortunately one of our volunteers was on hand to help move all that stuff into the cat trailer and kennel.

Image

One dog is traveling with special care, it is our little blind poodle, who is now in the arms of his new momma. He will travel to New Hampshire in her lap.

Image

ALong with the horse trailer they had a suburban and a large van to put animals in. They put cats mostly in the large van, but you can see Whatzit in the crate at the back and Mandy is unseen in the white crate to the lower right.

Image

Oh boy, now they can't get the numbers of dogs and cats taken to correspond to the paperwork. Problems, problems. Fortunately someone had everything properly documented on the computer and was able to straighten things out.

Image

Then next day and we have a completely new group of dogs and a completely new group of rescue angels. This time from Hideaway Kennels in Kansas City MO. The dogs arrived right after the Monadock people left, spent the night and that morning the Hideaway people were there bright and early to prepare them for their trip.

Image

They had three large vans and we worked hard to fit all the dogs and cats we had into them.

Image

Image

Some required medical treatment before they were loaded up. This old dog was badly dehydrated and they didn't have any IV fluid until they got to the shelter. By some strange coincidence of fate, the Monadock people had included a box full of IV fluid bags in the supplies they brought us. We kept putting the old dog in the bed with the blanket, but he kept crawling out and onto the concrete floor.

Image

As he was rehydrating, other dogs were getting water treatment of another sort before their trip. This dog was very depressed before he was bathed.

Image

Every attempt will be made to reunite these dogs with their owners. To this extent, each dog had a lable stating where it was found. This was the badly dehydrated dog that was found locked in a house, with a weeks supply of food and water. The address where he was found is on his collar. Frankly, i am the opinion that his owners do not deserve to get him back, but the rescue angels are not as judgemental as me on this subject.

Image

Wow these two have the kennel almost all to themselves after the rescue angels leave. I have never seen the kennel this empty. These two did not stay long either. When the Schnauzer rescue person saw their pictures she knew who they were and who their owners are. They are not people who would intentionally leave their pets behind. That is a worrisome thought.

Image

To end on a very happy note, when we got home, Fed Ex was there with a very large box. Cheryl was like a kid at Christmass. There was no return address on the box, but I am fairly certain where it came from. Thank you SOOOOO much. We love the Santa Monica Hats and Cheryl is not letting the soap out of her sight! There was only one casualty in the box. The bottle of Nature's Miricle Solution apparently leaked out, but it doesn't appear any harm was done. The scissors was one item we sorely need at the shelter, but no one else thought to provide. The gloves are much better than the one size fits all CSI type latex gloves the shelter provides. Cheryl says some of the material is too good for the shelter, especially that soap.

Thanks again and hope everyone is doing well.

Thank you Sceptic! It's so good to know that you and Cheryl and so many others do their best down there! Looks like you are slowly getting to the bottom of it? Or do they still find lots of stranded animals? Apart from their physical condition, do you feel they are very traumatized when they are found? Poor things! I just want to hug them all!

It's so good to see so much help for all the furry friends lost in the storm.

I do beg you Skeptic not to think the worst of those who are not with their animals. There are many reasons why that could have happened, especially since everyone thought they would be able to come back quickly (yes, all the news broadcasts said it would be bad, but they had said that before how many times and everyone was home in a couple or three days?) I suspect that old poodle was the pet of an elderly woman (or couple). Family members probably got the old folks out, but couldn't take the dog. (Imagine evacuating in a car made to seat 5 rather uncomfortably, but having more than that in it - grandma might have had to ride in the lap of her nephew, or carry the baby in hers). I can't imagine leaving without my dogs, but I have a car and I'm not dependent on others to get me out, and life doesn't always work the way we expect it to.

I hope all of the people who want their animals back will be able to find them.

Now, if Rita will just go away. :?

I'm sure there is a reason for everything, and everyone seems to have a different reason. I don't think Skeptic voiced anything out of the ordinary, please keep in mind that rescuers see it from all angles, they see the physical conditions of these pets, they see the heartache of the seperation from the owners, and they see even more heartache because some of these animals will not in fact, be reclaimed by the owners (the major rescue organizations are making every reasonable attempt to reunite them with their owners, and doing the very best they can with limited access, resources, shelter availability)

Disaster preparation is for a reason, pets are a vital part of that reason. But, each year, countless of pets are lost because some people feel they can 'weather the storm', for every hurricane there are lessons learned, but those lessons seem to be lost on others.

With this latest evacuation, are they now allowing people to bring their pets to shelters?

Good going guys you are doing a commendable job God Bless You,not many people take time off to care for our furry freinds. You must have seen Mumbai India in the news in July how the dumb cattle owners left their animals to drown,it was not a tidal wave that they had to run ,and leave those poor animals to perish.God Bless once again.
