I think I've mentioned before that we have a cat who gets a recurring fungal infection in her ear. I found this recipe for a preventative earwash and wanted to doublecheck that it would be safe for a cat (the site that had the recipe was a dog site). I'm hoping that the once a month treatment will keep the problem from coming back.
The ingredients are:
Isopropyl alcohol, Boric Acid Powder and Gentian Violet Solution. You squirt a bit of the mixture in the ear, massage briefly and wipe it away.
Traci and or Davet: Would this formula be good for cats?
don't know if it would work or not without trying it but
i would add salsylic acid to it....the gention violot is ok but if the cats shakes the ears while you are doing it or after you might have blue stains over everything, here is the one i used to use
Tannisol
5% tannic acid
5% salsylic acid
5% boric acid
qs alcohol
and a couple more, one of which is yours...but anyway re yours it should work but i just don't like the gention because of the staining..
Ear treatment
1 part white vinegar
1 part rubbing alcohol
3 parts water
Purple solution
INGREDIENTS:
16 Oz. Isopropyl Alcohol
4 Tablespoons Boric Acid Powder
16 Drops Gentian Violet Solution 1%
Mix together in alcohol bottle and shake well.
You will also need to shake solution every time you use it to disperse the Boric Acid Powder. Purchase the "Clairol" type plastic bottle to dispense solution to affected ears.

Assuming you mean a yeast infection, just curious, but what hasn't kitty responded to per your vet's Rx? These infections can be reoccurant regardless, I think I'd want an Rx more specific to yeast. Plus, the otic solution you would use prior to the meds, are gentle and easy on the inner ear canal.
..........Traci
They didn't tel me what kind of infection it was, but we treat her, clear it up, and within a short time it comes back. That is why I am thinking along the lines of preventative.
