Snickers
Snickers
Snickers is one of the feral cats outside....she is a beautiful tortuiseshell who usually has a luxurious coat with a tan cravet at her throat taht sways back and forth as she swaggers along beside Sammie and me on our walks...
I had not seen her since Sunday, and she was sort of limping then...lastnight I heard a cat faint meowing and when I would call her name, it would stop...I could not find her out there...
Today I heard nothing even though I searched everywhere alongside the house where I heard her...she still was not coming around, so I feared the worst and said a prayer for her safe journey...my husband said I did all I could do and that she did leave a legacy in her kittens, many of whom we managed to catch and tame and find homes for...
I just got in from walking Sammie, and missing her running along a few paces ahead of us...when there she was sitting on the sidewalk!...looking thin as a rail and terribly hungry...and putting no weight on that right front foot now...
Sammie was happy to see her, and she will let him play with her, and he was sniffing all over but she just growled at him...poor thing...I know she feels awful between her weight loss and her foot...
I am going to try to catch her tomorrow and get her to the vet...wish me luck in doing so...now that she is here, I think she will stay nearby for the night...

Re: Snickers
Good luck Tambrey. My prayers are with you and Snickers.
Re: Snickers
Thanks Cleo...when I went out this morning, she was not there...
I had to go to the vet and get Frontline anyways, so I mentioned her to him,and he said whenever I see her again to catch her and bring her in to him...his first thought is she has an abcess on her foot...from the way I described the was limping the other day, and now no weight at all on it, plus losing weight...he wants to see her and treat her as necessary...
It is a good thing they do take payments there...I just put out over $100 today for Frontline for the cats and Sammie!

Re: Snickers
Bless your big heart, Tambrey! Good luck for catching her soon.
Re: Snickers
I sat with Snickers for a while tonight...she came back tonight...I cannot bear to put her into a carrier even for the night...she has always had her freedom...
But she let me pet her...and she rolled over and purrrred and let me rub her belly...
She is now not putting weight on her left hind leg either...she did let me touch the foot, and did not growl, but when I moved higher to her thigh, she let out a growl...same with her right front foot/leg...
I am torn between putting her into a carrier overnight to take her in tomorrow, or letting her have her freedom and making her own choice, she has always been so independent...and her kitten is out there with her as well...I told her it was okay to go over the Bridge if that is what she wants to do...she looked at me with watery eyes and just kept purrrring...
As fast as this all has happened...and the weight loss and weakness...she is reminding me of my Blackfoot and how he died of heartworm last fall...I thought of that tonight as she finally let me pet her and rub her belly...
She feels cool to the touch, but she is also relaxed...and by letting me pet her, is almost as if she is saying goodbye...

Re: Snickers
Tambrey, don't second-guess....you have her, get her in the carrier, and get her seen by your vet first thing tomorrow, you'll have peace of mind for doing so....it could be easily treated, you won't know that until you've had her examined.
Please, get her seen.....please, please, please!

Re: Snickers
Snickers went to the vet this morning...she did NOT like the carrier at all!!
I did let her sleep out on the old couch with the blanket this morning, but she was gone when I went out...I just wandered and followed instiincts or whatever, and ended up in Blackfoot's old shed/house/run...we have not even mowed over that way this year and the weeds were taller than me...but I could see a little footpath...and there she was in that sheltered area...she let me pick her up, but I had to stand the carrier on end and lower her into it back end first to get her to stay in it...
The vets were not there when I took her up, so I left her and I just got off of the phone with the head vet...she has a fractured pelvis
In piecing things together...about 3-4 weeks ago she went into heat, and had 2 or 3 toms following her around...it was about 2-3 weeks ago that she began to lose her fur...then I could see she was losing weight...and this past weekend she was limping on that front foot and just not steady on her feet at all and losing more weight fast...
The vet is summising that a tom got too rough with her and with her weight loss, most likely due to fleas, ear mites and worms, which he is treating all today...that in the process of trying to mate, he broke her pelvis bone as well as while holding onto her, did something to her right shoulder area...there are scabs there that he is going to clean up as well...
We do live near a highway, and a grainery, but the truckers and the guys who work at the grainery love the cats as much as we do and will watch out for them as well...
Snickers never ventures even across the railroad tracks, and there are two sets of those before the highway, so I know she did not get hit by a car...the furthest she will wander is between the grainery and our house and the next house over...
Sooo...Snickers will be living in our bathroom for a few weeks until she heals, and then I am hoping that the tom was not successful, but either way, she will have to be spayed because she will not be able to go through another birth of kittens even after her pelvis heals...plus, we do not need more kittens...
Then....well...I cannot keep TWELVE cats in the house...I have GOT to find homes for some of these cats...but I cannot see Snickers being able to go back outside after she heals even...
Thanks for the prayers...I will keep you posted...

Re: Snickers
I'm so glad you took her in! Broken pelvis, oh dear God! That she was even able to still walk around! She must have been in so much pain though, and not able to hunt and take care of herself .... poor Sweetie!
Nothing can be done to help it heal faster, and better? No cast or something?
Poor girl! I hope she's not pregnant. Guess they would have to be aborted?
Bless you Tambrey, for being so good! Hope she'll be alright and you'll find a good home for her.

Re: Snickers
Tambrey, thank you for taking her in and getting her the help and treatment she needs.
I disagree on the roughness of a tom causing a fractured pelvis. She very well could have got hit by a car, took a fall or had something heavy fall on her, etc.
