has anyone heard of this breed?

Post by momtotwo »

we have a blacklab/ swedish shepherd cross, while we know lots on the lab, we can find little info on the swedish shepherd. Has anyone had any experience with this breed? I think it is rather rare but does exist as one book has acknowledged it.

The breed name is the Swedish Vallhund.

See Here.

I personally love the distant cousin, the welsh corgi

Thanks Traci, I compared the picture you posted with the picture of the swedish shepherd in the book I have, they do look similiar except for the description of the weight which is put at a bit lower on the swedish shepherd. In the book they warn not to confuse the swedish shepherd with the Welsh Corgi. Anyhow the book i refer to is Simon and Shuster's Guide to Dogs copyright 1980 dog description 23. If you have access to this book can you check, in the meantime I will continue to look into the Swedish Vallhund because i want to really know more about this dog, he is only the mix of the two breeds though the lab seems to dominate, he is a very easy going dog, great with children and cats and very submissive (the cats rule him!)

I don't have the book, and I'm not familiar with the vallhund, however, I am familiar with corgis.

They are adorable, loyal, mellow and generally do not have the desire to get into trouble, but are laid back and calm. They are extremely loving with their owners, but some do prefer to favor only one "parent".

The black lab, on the other hand, is spirited, rambunctious, playful, and full of energy, some of them love trouble, and if your dog has more of the lab traits, you might want to consider obedience training

thanks traci, our dog is almost 6 years old so isn't too rambunctious, he is very loyal and friendly, if company comes he will follow them around the house and in the evenings when my husband and i are sitting on the couch he is right between us with his head in one of our laps.
the only discipline problem he really has, and i don't know if obedience training could adress this, is chasing cars. we live on a very busy highway and he has to be chained when he is on his run (he does have the lab tendency to chew through rope), once he unclipped it and ran on the road, he was hit but survived with a scratch only. When i walk him and a car goes by, he is immediately drawn to it, i have to shorten his lease so he won't get between someones wheels. i thought being hit by a car would have taught him. I would love to take him for a run somewhere but i don't trust him to come back! he does know the basic commands of sit, come and stay but can't follow them if he is a mile away!
