CRF food question

Post by Dave B »

Hi
Our cat Nola who is a 17 year old female DSH was diagnosed as beginning CRF about a year and a half ago. Her blood work has actually improved a little since then. Her current food consists of Purina NF (dry), Hills KD (dry & canned), and IVD Modified (canned). She recently has stopped liking both of the canned food but is still eating the dry. Our vet doesn’t seem overly concerned but her weight has gone from 8 lbs 2 oz to 7 lbs 14 oz. I’m thinking this is probably due to the fact that the dry food is less caloric. I’ve done a little research (always a dangerous thing ;-) )and noticed there are some other canned foods that are very close in percentage (using the “dry matter analysis” method) for both protein, phosphorous and fat. Do you think it would be ok for her to have some of these foods as a “treat” once in a while as long as she is still eating the dry food just to fatten her up a bit?

Thanks in advance for any help or suggestions

I would advise talking with your vet about it first, since he/she has access to Nola's recent blood results, in order to determine an appropriate ratio of protein/phosphorus in another diet, based on her individual needs. Perhaps it would be more revealing to find out why she has decreased interest in the canned foods...prior to her diagnosis, did she prefer canned?

As a treat or supplement, it probably wouldn't hurt to feed a different brand, but check with your vet first. CRF cats often lose weight due to the disease process, and the weight may not always be regained..your vet can tell you if he/she thinks the weight reduction should be addressed.
