Traci...about UTI"s again

Post by Marty »

On the cat board, you said stress delays the healing.....would that apply to dogs as well. Biscotti has been on the cephalexin for over a week now, and is still having accidents. She stopped for a couple of days, but has started up again. We have been having thunderstorm threats almost daily, and we know she has a storm fear.... She won't eat when there is a storm around, so I have to force her meds into her.

Yes, applies to dogs as well.

You'll have to discern whether the accidents are due to stress from the recent thunderstorms, or if the infection isn't clearing from the cephalexin.

Can't remember if you noted it or not, but if a followup urinalysis wasn't done after the first course of antibiotics, you should probably get that done, and/or a culture/sensitivity test to determine if she has an infection not responsive to certain antibiotics. Depending on her age, and the frequency of the accidents, you might want to ask your vet about a possible inflammation problem or incontinence probolem developing (don't want to scare you, just giving you something to ask your vet about)

Stress can not only delay healing, but it's also a precursor to reoccuring UTI's...particularly in cats, but that's not to say it isn't the same for dogs.

Thanks...that is food for thought.

Another thought.......she had been on antibiotcs for a pseudomona infection in her ear...it was cultured and an appropriate antibiotic given....this was over a year ago. Could she have built up a resistance to some antibiotics (she has never had cephalexin)..

I had to change her Vet due to a tech who pulled on her ear when she had the infection, and she went ballistic going in there the next few times. She is fine with the new Vet. They know her history.

Possibly, but that's why a culture/sensitivity test may be needed, in order to determine what type of infection is present and what antibiotic it's going to respond to. Staph, for example, won't respond to mild antibiotics such as clavamox.

Thanks....I finally got my steam cleaner working again, and got the carpet cleaned. Now for the enzyme stuff...nothing like a smelly dining room...hey, maybe I could get out of cooking for the holidays... If she continues with this, we'll get a culture done.
