Safe products for dogs?

Post by Ash »

Traci, in another post you provided this link http://www.nrdc.org/health/effects/qpets.asp

I have checked the active ingredients of two parasite treatments prescribed by our vet(s) for our dogs last year. The ingredients are not listed on that site.

They are

Amitraz in a product for mange, ticks, fleas and lice

Flumethrin in a product for ticks

Are they safe? Our vet last year also once recommended to wash Noodle with the Amitraz solution when she had mange. (We didn't do it.)

Your vets really need a good course in small animal toxicology!

Do NOT ever use Amitraz on cats.

It is primarily used in dogs for demodectic mange, or as a tick repellent in collars. However, it has little to no effectiveness on fleas, and if you use it on the dogs, keep your cats away from the dogs or the collars.

Flumethrin is a synthetic pyrethroid, NOT to be used around cats, ever. Synthetic pyrethroids are toxic to cats, and even some dogs, so my advice is not to use any pyrtethrin/pyrethroid substance on any of your pets. If the flumethrin is used as a collar for the dogs, they could develop sensitivities or adverse reactions (usually dermal), and if the collar or application contains additional or inert ingredients such as a carbamate, then don't ever use it, period. I think this pesticide is only registered in a handful of countries, the US is not one of them.

For them dogs and cats are just the same

I never used the Amitraz on the cats, thank God. That time she got two ivermectin shots and the mange cleared up just fine. We watched the others and miracolusly nobody had caught it from her.

We used both products on the dogs only once when we had a heavy tick infestation in summer last year. Ususally (and when it's available) we use Frontline for 'minor' flea problems.
