Good article, but, I'm afraid the people who need to see it either won't read it or will have multilple 'reasons' to claim it's wrong.

And especially because vets recommend against raw food, and "they have no nutritional training". SIGH.

they have no nutritional training

this is an argument a friend of mine ( a pediatricion) used to have made to him...We were in the same boat..we didnt have a specific course in nutrition but every species that we studied both for information and then for disease had day after day of nutrition...People don;t realize in vet med that cos, horses, cats, dogs, squirrels etc etc--even tropical fish ( which i admit i did not have much training in) all had differetn nutrative requirments so were studied along with that animal..i suspect if it were condensed into one course it would be at least 4 semesters. just happened to think if i ever got around to writing my thesis, i could have an MS to add to my name...But i must say i don't know too much now aboiut cattle nutrition and cattle food physiology..

OK, I wouldn't do the raw feeding, but what do you think of home cooking, if you have a recipe designed specially for dogs?

I can't seem to find a kibble to control Java's itchies, and was thinking of doing this.

i think home cooking is fine as long as you give a viamine supplement and keep a diary..so if they get diarrhea the next day then you have a good idea of what caused it...Having 7 kids and two adults around the table (wow i just repictured that) we had a lot of food left over and gave it to our pets, often mixed with dog food...they seemed to survive pretty well on that diet bu8t agreeably it was not as nutritious as a fortified commercial diet...but the kids and dogs, and cats, an hampsters , and ferrits, and G-pigs, and seagulls, and alligators, and iguanos, and an occaisional ant farm seemed to do all right,,,of course they did not all get table scraps...oops forgt the occaisional chicken , parakeet and lord knows what else
