Need help for cat not using litterbox!

Post by IUAlUMNI »

I hope this site can help me and save my cat. My 11 year old male cat has decided to not use the litterbox anymore to (put it bluntly) poop in!
My husband says it is time for Chester to be put to sleep. I have tried different litter, changed the location of litterbox, lid on and off, two litterboxes since I have a female cat. I am at my wits end and we have new carpet which is what my husband is upset about. I don't know what to do. Chester will do this even when we are at home with him. I can't watch him and work too. Why is it he will pee in it but won't always poop in it? Help - please!

When was his last vet check? If you haven't had him checked within the last 6 months to a year, now is a good time to do so. Also, if you've never had full blood profiling done, you need to do that now. Any kitty over the age of 7 should have annual bloodwork done to detect any hidden disease associated with age.

Your kitty is eliminating outside the box as a means of getting your attention to another matter. Whether that be stress related or a health issue. Your primary concern is ruling out health problems, so get him checked ASAP. After your vet has deemed him healthy, you then need to find the cause of stress in the environment, such as recent changes (i.e., the new carpet), other forms of stress, even your own stress can have an effect on him.

Tell your husband to exercise patience, you adopted your kitty for life, it's up to you to ensure that his senior years are comfortable, healthy and happy. So, first things first, vet check is in order immediately.
