Strange noise..CAT IN HEAT ???

Post by momPaws »

help...earlier when I took Honey out there was a strange animal noise coming from kinda far away, but now it is closer and could be in my yard- (dark out- can't see what it is).
Question- do cats only go into heat at a certain time...I don't know if it's that or a hurt animal. She is uptodate on her rabies, but will not let her out without a leash tomorrow am.

Cats have heat cycles - twice a year ususally. I don't think it's related to seasons.

Cats in heat make a noise, yes, they are calling for the tomcat. The tomcat will also make sounds if there is another male around ... When two cats fight it often sounds almost like a (human) baby crying, and it does sound very distressing. And it can go on for hours ... building up to a fierce crescendo, you think they are killing each other.

Hard to say though without hearing the sound you hear. Could well be a hurt cat, but more often they are just quiet and hide when they are hurt. A cat would more likely scream in fear/pain/terror, if for example someone grabs her and puts her into a cage etc, out of protest and to fight the stranger off.

But again, hard to say. Maybe go out with a torch, if you're comfortable to do so?

Thanks for input, Ash. Now it is morning. The noise stopped...it sounded like the animal was walking all around the neighborhood..but sometimes too close to my house. Maybe it was the neighbor's cat and they took it in? Don't know. My yard is fenced, but of course a cat or other animal could get in...hopefully is gone.

It is day here..is it night in India?

Ash, intact females can go into heat once or twice a month and will continue their heat cycles until they are spayed.

Mompaws, it could have been a tomcat (intact male) on the prowl or facing another intact male and sparring, but it could also have been a very hurt cat. The most common "howl or yowl" can be heard when a cat has been hit by a car, attacked by a dog, or has suffered a major injury to the pelvis, etc and cannot walk to escape further danger.

If you ever hear these sounds again, always try to search the area where the animal sound is coming from...in the event a cat may be seriously hurt (laying against a curb, in the middle of a street, under a car/tree/bush, etc) and may require immediate veterinary attention.

Didn't know that. Mine used to go only twice a year.

Mompaws, yes, when it's your night, it's my day - I'm about 12 hours ahead of the US.

Seems Indian cats are more coy :D None of our females went in heat that often. Maybe - just having a wild guess here - the extreme seasons here forced cats to adjust over the millenias?

Was not a hurt or injured cat- I could have recognized that. Probably a cat in heat or as T said a tom-cat..anyway- hope it is gone for good! It really stirred up little Honey as does any unusual noise outside.

My cats too are all hanging at the windows looking worried when there are cat fights outside. And my dogs bark along to make it all the more dramatic.
