I met an adorable Bassett Hound at the pet supply store...ms

Post by Mary Plummer »

...just now. His name is Charlie, and he's about 6 yrs. old. His new people were thrilled with him. It was a sad story though. They just got him from the humane society; his previous owners turned him in because he was getting "too old" and they preferred younger dogs :x Mr. Blue is going to be 6 this year, and I can't ever imagine "turning him in for a younger model." As I told these people, Mr. Blue is stuck with me. I'm just so glad Charlie got some new people who are crazy about him!

I HATE it when I hear that stuff!

And I just met a basset with the opposite owners! 12 year old, totally white basset girl, near where I work. I used to see them walking her all the time when I'd go out at lunch time, but hadn't seen them in a while.

I saw them yesterday on the way to Burger King, the owner's got a wagon with him. Hmmmm. On the way out after buying lunch, they're still there, owner's looking at her with a grim look, dog's just sitting on a bit of grass. I ask if he needs help. He says no, he's got it under control. Turns out she had some kind of a blood clot, was paralyzed for a while and then needed severe back surgery. Her recovery has been very very slow, she can only walk a few feet yet. But dang, that's one happy dog, and in otherwise excellent condition! Spotless and groomed, no sores from the lack of mobility, good weight, eyes bright... I actually thanked the guy for doing what he's doing for her, it's so wonderful to see owners go the extra miles for their critters!!

Thank God Charlie found a new home. I can't imagine letting one of my animals go. Our cat Susie is 21 yrs old and still going strong. Charlie will have many years of being loved by the sounds of things.

LM, what an inspirational story on the love between a dog and her family. Hope she does well.

I cannot imagine anyone dumping one of these sweet dogs! We rescued Biscotti from the shelter after the person who found her wrote in to the newspaper. I saw that, and put in a bid for her.. I got her after her 5 days were up and no one claimed her. I suspect that she may have bolted because of a storm, which she is so scared of. Since we have had her, she has had disc surgery, and you know about the ears...but she is here with us forever. I just don't understand some people, and it is so nice to be on a board, where everyone feels the same about their pets!
