Sophia Needs Surgery :(
Sophia Needs Surgery :(
I was walking Sophia and Sammie yesterday and suddenly Sophia lifted her hind left leg and hopped a bit, then shook it off and was fine...I figured she stepped on a small rock as we live on a gravel road, even though I do try to keep them to the grass on the edge...when we got home, I checked her foot and pads and did not see anything visibly and she did not react in any way...
Well, lastnight she seemed a bit not quite herself, but today when Mom brought her down, she was fine and running all around...but then, I took them for their morning walk, and she did it again...sooo we took her to the vet right away...
He felt her leg and said right away that her patella was not in place, but with him moving it, it went right back into place...he put her down and watched her walk, and said it was slipping out too much....
He said to give her a couple of weeks, but there is a 50/50 chance she will need surgery to shorten the ligament and he said he would also grind out the bone a bit to make a better groove for the patella to sit in...he said as long as she is willing to walk on it he will leave her be, but to not wait too long, and if she begins to only put her foot down when standing to get her in right away...I asked about her daily walk, and he said to continue with that because she will still need the exercise and to not get her fat and lazy...
I asked how much that was going to cost, so we knew how much we needed to come up with in a couple of weeks...he said $95.00!! Mom let out a sigh and said, "Ohhh...I thought you were going to say something like $600.00!" He laughed and said, "In the "big city" it would be that or more, but remember, we live in smalltown midwest and I know people do not have that much and I cannot charge that much."
Sooo...Sophia will have knee surgery in a couple of weeks...

$95 surgery for a luxating patellar? Your vet is a gem.
Poor baby...but, it's best to have the surgery done early on.

Re: Sophia Needs Surgery :(
That is what Mom and I decided...it is better to do it now while she is young and can recover easier, and before it gets to be too bad, rather than waiting til she is older and it is giving her alot of grief and the surgery might not go as well, either, then...
Yes, he is a good guy...I do not take the little kittens to him because he is more of a farm animal vet, but is also very good with dogs, and basic things for cats (spay/neuter, shots, URIs, and so forth)...
and he has a partner who is more of the small animal vet at the clinic, so he may be the one to do the actual surgery...this vet we saw today is the owner of the clinic...
I will keep you posted on how she does...
hhmmm....I wonder if he will let me be there when he does it...I would love to see...I'll have to ask him! This kind of thing fascinates me, but I could never do it...even though I can stick a tube down a person's throat if necessary!!

Sorry to hear about Sophia! But it seem she's in good hands with you, your mom and a couple of great vets! I agree, better do it early.
One nice thing about India: I have witnessed every operation done on my animals. I like to watch and learn things (my husband runs!). Of course I get on the surgeons nerves with all my questions and concerns ...

Just for the heck of it, I checked Crystal's bill when we had her spayed. I payed more than $95 just for the anesthesia and pre-anesthesia injection.
Re: Sophia Needs Surgery :(
WOW...I cannot remember what he charges for a spay or neuter, because we usually carter those for computer work that my DH does...but the last neuter we got was $65 total and I know a spay would cost a bit more, I think he charges about $80 for that...and that includes an overnight stay

I'm sorry.....I was so in shock at what your vet charges that I nearly forgot to send my get well wishes to sweet little Sophia with the luxating patella.
It sounds more like something you would get at a spa, doesn't it?
"Excuse me, I am here for a cucumber facial and a luxating patella treatment".

Thanks
ROFL...yeah really...it does sound more glamorous that it really is...I can imagine it must be quite painful actually...but she never even let out a yelp or anything while he maneuvered her leg and felt the patella way off to the side!!

My charges came to $272.46 and included an e-collar that lasted 5 minutes. Oh, but on my bill one of the line items reads:Tambrey wrote:I think he charges about $80 for that...and that includes an overnight stay
