Cat Food Question
Cat Food Question
Hi Traci: I was wondering what your thoughts are about nurto cat food. My older cat Isabella is on prescription Science Diet (not changing). and Lincoln was eating nutro before he died and science diet wet.
Is it a good food? I just thought I'd ask before taking the cat plunge again. I found a great rescue agency for abandoned cats.

Re: Cat Food Question
Bless your heart for considering taking in another kitty into your heart and home, I know you are dealing with a difficult time....
As for Nutro, I'm sorry, but I do not think much of it, I think too many cats have serious gastrointestinal upsets with it, and the manufacturer has been known to "modify" their formulas on unsuspecting cat owners (probably accounting for the GI tract upsets)
Personally, I use Science Diet, my cats have always done well on it, I'm using adult maintenance dry.
If/when you decide to get another kitty, please have him/her fully examined and tested for FELV/FIV.....dewormed if necessary and vaccinated accordingly per your vet's recommendations before introducing to Isabella.

Re: Cat Food Question
Does anyone have an opinion on Solid Gold cat foods?
Re: Cat Food Question
Thanks Traci. I knew Science diet was A-O-K. I don't know much about Solid Gold. But I am not gonna switch at all.

Sorry, Susan, my opinion on Solid Gold isn't good, at all, I would never recommend it.

Re: Cat Food Question
Thanks! A woman at Petsmart suggested Solid Gold. My problem is that Burbank, my 17 yr.old boy is eating Purina NF per vet's advice as a precaution because of his age and Simon (9 months) eats Iams but will eat Burb's leftovers. I feed them in separate rooms/dishes but Burb doesn't always eat all of his food. Needless to say, Simon is starting to get a little chunky. I'd like to find a food that they both can eat that has some kind of support for kidney function. Burbank's levels were great but the vet said that with his age it's not a matter of IF he'll have kidney trouble but WHEN. I don't know. I want to keep him as healthy and happy as long as possible. Any ideas for food would be great.
thanks
thanks
Re: Cat Food Question
Since the NF has reduced sodium and phosphorus, Simon shouldn't be eating it. If Burbank isn't finishing his meals, put it up until he is fed again.
You can continue to feed Simon kitten food until one year of age, or you can graduate him onto an adult maintenance food now if you wish. You can also ask your vet about the amounts to feed Simon if he is prone to obesity, but this will depend on the diet fed and his activity level. Ideally, at least 10 minutes a day or so with playtime and activity is helpful to keep him active and trim.
I have fed all my kittens Iams kitten food, canned during weaning, and dry during growth and development. I feed all my adult cats Science Diet maintenance.

Re: Cat Food Question
Will someone please explain why Nutro and Solid Gold are not good foods and what is so wonderful about Science Diet and all of the grains in it especially the formulas with grain as a 1st ingredient?
Re: Cat Food Question
Your other post was removed because you made inappropriate comments, I would advise you not attempt to do so again. If you have some sort of agenda, this is not the forum to promote it.

Re: Cat Food Question
I really do not know what inappropriate comments I have made. I am truely sorry if I offended anyone. I honestly want to know the differences in these foods. I've been feeding Nutro for 4 years now and my cats have done excellent on it. I did a lot of research 4 years ago to find the best possible food that my 2 finicky cats would agree on and it ended up being Nutro. If this isn't a good food for them I would like to know why so I could try switching them to something else. I've had cats for 28 years. My first 2 cats were fed grocery store food and they're coats were awlful and they had a lot of hairballs unlike the 2 cats I have now. I didn't know anything back then about the better foods. Thank you for your help.
