We have not to gain his confidence or his friendship:he is born our friend; while his eyes are still closed, already he believes in us:
even before his birth, he has given himself to man.

Hmmm
He was a symbolist, therefore there is probably a deeper meaning to this beyond what it says literally. .....

Found another dog quote by him that I like ..
"We are alone, absolutely alone on this chance planet: and, amid all the forms of life that surround us, not one, excepting the dog, has made an alliance with us. "

Checked in Britannica...
Interesting... I could recall the name, vaguely, not the rest exactly... I had the impression Maeterlinck was a philosopher and guess he was in a way... Thanks Mom Paws and Skeptic! Seriously, the times have been a bit too busy for old E's lately, even somewhat hectic and/or dramatic... I should have been in bed an hour ago but feared I wouldn't sleep... So now I believe I can. Again, thanks, friends. I like what Maurice said about dogs...
PS: The 'chance planet' part reminds me of Thomas Wolfe's reference to our residence here as being on "... this unbright cinder..." Not the way I see life at all, but somehow comforting to know more gifted souls than I have asked the same old question on occasion... "What's it all about, Alfie?"
