When can Cat explore the House?

Post by jenni0214 »

Hey, I was just wondering my hand raised kitten is now almost 6 weeks old. She is still tiny and my vet agrees she is healthy just small. I was wondering, I have introduced food to her and she uses her litter box. When should I introduce her to the rest of the house? :? She is small and can get around well, I am just worried I will lose her in my house. Any suggestions will be greatly appreciated. Thank you!

I would bring her out for supervised playtime in the living room or family room and just keep an eye on her...however, please remember that like all babies/youngsters who are potty training...she will get to playing and usually not make it to the litter box in time if it is left in a far away room...I would maybe suggest getting another small one to have in the room she will be in, and let her know where it is at...

Make sure she has lots of little kitten toys to play with, as well as play with you...

Have fun...

To add to Tambrey's advice, kitten-proof your home! In other words, just as if you had a baby or toddler, keep breakables out of reach, make sure there are no dangerous obstacles that could fall on her, keep electrical cords out of reach, keep all plants out of reach, close up holes or spaces she could get stuck in, and if you have any reclining chairs, watch your baby near them!

A couple of additional comments:

If you're in the habit of dropping rubber bands, paper clips, staples, needles, etc., around and forgetting about them, try to get into the habit of picking them up and keeping an eye open for them. Same for pieces of string and thread. Some cats eat these kinds of things, and they can get a rubber band down in no time at all.

Also, I once knew a kitten who hid under the family refrigerator. It was hard to get her out. If your kitty goes missing, you might want to look there!

Another thing...keep the toilet closed and all closet doors closed as well. Good luck with your baby.

Thank you all so very much. I took her out of the bathroom (where I kept her while not around to let her out to play), and she will now be staying in my room, I picked everything up and she is just the most curious and playful thing. I am hoping that this will be good for her, hoping that she won't get into any mischeif. Thank you again.
