cat wakes up too early!
cat wakes up too early!
Help! I have a 2 year old cat, adopted from a shelter, for 3 months now. She wakes up every morning at 4:00 am, and meows throughout the house. She wanders into our bedroom, and jumps on the bed, and will not sit still-pacing and meowing. She'll calm down if we get up and feed her, but then she'll do the same ritual again until we get up. We've tried spraying her with water when she bothers us in bed, but she always comes back! We've tried placing her in a spare bedroom at night with the door closed, but she clawed her way through the carpet. What else can we try to get her to sleep later, and to not bother us until it's really time to get up?!
Re: cat wakes up too early!
My cat does that! But I work at night so first thing in the morning is my nighttime (if you see what I mean!) She´s been spoilt & I feed her on demand but now I am trying to feed her twice a day, once when I get in and once when I wake up. I wish I´d been doing that in the first place! I shut her out of the bedroom else she´ll come and jump on the bed every couple of hours & I do need my sleep! She´s feeding kittens so I am feeding her extra, she´s getting through about 2 tins a day (and she´s a small cat), am trying to wean her on to half dry food, half wet but she´s not happy about that either! Your best bet is making sure your cat gets a good meal before you go to bed then maybe she won´t be hungry by 4am....? Can´t think of other advice, but hope that works
Good luck

We have ten cats, and always have dishes wth dry food available for them to eat whenever they want to...plus plenty of water of course...
And we keep the bedroom door shut so they do not bother us...some are okay to just go to sleep, but others think feet moving under the blankets is an invitation to play!!
Just make sure you give her plenty of attention during your waking hours, make sure she has food water and claen litter box available at all times, and keep working with her to train her to not bother you so early!

Some additional thoughts:
1) get a second cat, so she has someone to play with.
2) make your apartment/house more entertaining for her. Window seats, a cat tree to climb, toys (but be careful, use only toys that cannot harm her when unsupervised, no strings, for example).
3) and yes, what the others said, give her a full meal before going to sleep.
