SSSCat!
SSSCat!
Well, I broke down and got one of these to try...basically it is a unit that sits on top of canned air, and when it senses motion up to 3 feet away, it gives a warning sound, then a short , gentle, barely one second, spray of air...it works!...and after only a couple of days on either corner of that counter and the cats do not get on that counter any more!!...so tonight it is on a different counter...however, the can of air says it lasts 200 sprays, but not so sure about that...unless they tried ALOT at night!!...BUT, they are trained now to scat with just the sound, so that is enough to keep them away, so I just have the main unit sitting on a can of green chilis on the opposite counter...
When we bought it, and looked at the ingredients on the can...it is the same used to clean computers and such...canned air basically...so DH figured he could just use one of his cans from the CASES of air he has for cleaning computers...BUT...the unit does NOT fit those cans...the air leaks out when attached to a canned air for computers...grrrrr...we finally figured it out, that the crimping around the little nozzle is at the bottom on the SSSCat cans, and the middle on the ones DH has...and waht makes me soooo mad is that they want to charge $15.00 for a refill can!!...
DH even tried to move air from one of his to theirs by hooking up the little straw that comes with his and a nozzle form an older can on theirs, because with the regular canned air, you can move air from can to can...but they even were smart enough to but a backflow checkvalve in, so no air can go in that way!!...
THAT BITES...I am NOT spending $15.00 for canned air!!...I am going to keep playing with one of DH cans and even try to recrimp it if I have to!!

Re: SSSCat!
LOL, that's how they reel you in, rig it so you have to get their replacements.
With any luck, the cats will learn fast and you won't have to replace the cans

Re: SSSCat!
yeah really...if I must replace one, and I cannot rig one of ours, then I will look on ebay...that is where I bought this one from...I eBay ALOT!!
Re: SSSCat!
Don't want to sound mean, but the cats might just get used to the sound and jump up anyway ...
Does the air go off every time you or another family member passes the can, too?

Re: SSSCat!
yes Ash....if I have it facing out towards the room, it will go off...and it has...scared the crap outa my 14 year old son one morning...but I usually have it facing from a corner out across the counter, so unless we are setting something there, it does not go off...
But the cats have learned that the sound means a spray of air a couple of seconds later...it does not happen at the same time...so they do not even know that the air is not hooked up...they just hear the warning beep and scram!!
It has a switch on the back also, so can be turned off when we are out there...DH forgot to turn it back on the other day...and I caught Callie up there...hind feet on one counter, front feet on the one with the can (90 degree corner counters) and she was investigating that can and device...she would get so close, then pull back...reach with her foot, then pull back...it was funny...but after a few tries, she decided it was not worth trying to get any closer and jumped down!

Re: SSSCat!
hhmmm....I would think she would need opposable thumbs to do that with...the switch is sooo tiny on the back of it...but I would not put it past her to figure it out...I have to keep corks in our water cooler or come to the kitchen to find almost ifve gallons of water all over the floor because she figured out those spigots and likes to drink the fresh flowing water...
Re: SSSCat!
Sounds like a very sophisticated device!
Sounds like the Pawlow response (or what was it called?) is happening - they now know the air will follow the beep, so they ran when it beeps. Soon you won't have to buy those expensive refills at all! Thanks to the high IQ of your cats They probably think, "Thank God, mommy installed this 'beep' to warn us about that nasty air!"

Re: SSSCat!
yes, I think that is what it is...they are conditioning to move with the sound, and pretty soon will just not even get on the counter because they know a beep will happen...and then maybe air
it has been funny too, when there are a few near the counter in the kitchen and one jumps up and it beeps...they ALL scram from the kitchen...hahaha...a stampede of cats....ROFL...

Re: SSSCat!
And you have 10 of them, right? Too funny! Your dog must be wondering what's this all about.
