Licking female's urine
Licking female's urine
Compared to my experience with cats, I'm a novice with dogs. Maybe someone can tell me why my male dog, Lassie is his name, licks, or tries to lick, my female dog's urine? Then he pees on top. I usually pull him away when I see him wanting to lick, but today I thought, maybe there's something in the urine that he somehow needs (hormones ???).
The female, Shida, is spayed, he is not (my husband doesn't want it).

Re: Licking female's urine
Where is the urine..inside or outside? (I'm assuming the latter)
No, it isn't a hormone issue, it is probably simply instinct (who knows why dogs do the things they do).
Didn't we discuss the neuter thing a while back? Your husband needs to get over his human equation with canine neutering...did you show him the neuter links?

No, we discussed this about my friend who's female dog has problems when going into heat.
Yes, the urine is outside.
I have tried many times to talk to my husband. I will show him the link. *sigh* Indians don't like the thought of testicles being cut off!

Re: Licking female's urine
Mmmmh, I looked at your Spay & Neuter link but it doesn't say much about dogs. Lassie is nine years old. Is it more risky to neuter him that late? What exactly are the pro's and con's regarding his health? (Risk of cancer, for example?)
Re: Licking female's urine
The neoplasias listed for intact males apply to dogs as well.
If the dog is in excellent health, there should be no reason he can't be neutered. I would advise a full exam, blood profile, etc prior to anesthesia of course in any pet over the age of 7 or with concurrent health conditions....and an exam/presurgical screen for young pets.
Because he's older, he may be more subject to an infection post-neutering, but you and your vet can monitor him for that.

Re: Licking female's urine
Mickey was neutered at 10 or 11, and he came through just fine (had his teeth cleaned and a hematoma on his ear fixed all at the same time!). The main risk is for an enlarged prostate which might lead to cancer (uncertain), but it is much more likely that the enlargement eventually block the urethra and cause urinary retention - which usually results in recurrent bladder infections. Mickey was not one bit different after the neuter than before except that he would urinate in only one or two spots instead of having to 'mark' the entire yard every time he went out. He lived an additional 5 years, and the neuter had nothing to do with his death.Ash wrote:Is it more risky to neuter him that late? What exactly are the pro's and con's regarding his health? Re: Licking female's urine
this takes me back many years...there was a guy who owned a female dog and he refused to have her spayed because she was the incarnation of a nurse that took care of him when he was wounded...saved his life...He would not spay the dog for that reason...the dog finaly died at about 8 years of age from a ruptured pyometra....which was not a pleasant way to go....this can happen to any older female unspayed dog...spaying is far safer and easier on the dog than an emergency pyometra operation.....just a bit i=of information for what it is worth
Re: Licking female's urine
Thank you everybody! I will definitely talk to my dh again about it.
Well, I just did. He got angry with me, he usually either gets angry with me or just says "We'll see", and changes the subject.
Now he was angry because 1) he believes that male animals that are not neutered are happier, and 2) because it costs money. The recent blood and urine tests, x-ray for Noodle, and Tommy's new low fat food (which is more expensive than the regular food), have already upset him. He sees them mostly as unneccessary expenses.
However, he said, we'll talk again about it when business picks up (now it's low season here for business, high time is the winter).
*sigh* I could go in another long rant at this point, but I'll spare you guys all the details!

Re: Licking female's urine
Show him more spay/neuter links, and tell him that HE will be much happier when he doesn't have to spend his life savings on a cancer that could have been prevented by a fairly simple neuter operation. I would think that people in India, since the dogs are running loose, suffering illnesses left and right and people generally treat them as expendable, that they would catch on to the benefits of spaying and neutering.
