Hi=) My name is Jane and I am new to this forums. I have a question that I desperately need your expert help. I have a female cat who is one year and eight months old. She has never copulated, but she does experience her periods of arousal every month. It is almost like a period-- she'll howl for a few days, and hump and bump herself against the wall... yeah, so that is normal.
What is NOT normal is the reason for which I have come to these forums. Yesterday when I arrived home from school, she welcomed me at the door with the most ghoulish howl I have ever heard. She howled and hissed and disappeared. I thought she was traversing through one of those-- uh-- arousal periods, so I ignored it. To my devastation, however, I found her hidden in the cupboard two hours later---- her anus (or urethra or vagina) was dripping in a yellow humor with a few blood droplets in it. "What the----" was my response. I panicked, I called the animal hospital, and they suggested that I take her in. I could not afford to do so and just resigned myself to losing my kitty. She meowed and continued to drip. She curled herself adjacent to the wall... fell asleep... and got up a few hours later, happy as if nothing had happened. My mother showered her and that was the end of it.
This was yesterday. Today she played and has been her normal cat-self as if nothing of the sort had occurred. If my mother had not had witnessed the event, I would be convinced that it was all a bad dream. My mother's hypothesis is that she is probably so aroused and so *beep* deprived that she just let go of everything that she's been saving in her reproductive system throughout her life. I am not so certain, but I have no better explanation in return. Does anybody in here have a clue as to what could have occurred? I would appreciate any ideas.
Puzzling Cat Event

Please keep your posts in one thread.
Cats can go into heat once or twice a month, and every time you allow her to go through a heat cycle, is putting her at risk for various health problems, such as pyometra, urinary tract infections, uterine cancer, mammary cancer. Your kitty should be spayed promptly.
Love Your Pets - Spay and Neuter.
In this particular case, she could already be developing a urinary tract infection, and without treatment, she could develop worsening symptoms and infection. Blood in the urine is not a good sign, and rarely do in-heat cats ever discharge blood. Don't take chances with your kitty's health, get her to your vet immediately for an exam, urinalysis and to schedule a spay appointment. Don't wait on this!
To answer your other question, cats don't need milk, and most cats are lactose intolerant, milk can cause an upset stomach, gassy intestines, consitpation or diarrhea. If you're feeding her a high quality adult maintenance cat food, milk, human treats, etc are not necessary.

I don't know exactly what a 'yellow humor' is, but it sounds very much like pus mixed with blood! You can't afford to let this go without treatment, she most probably has an infection which will ony get worse if untreated. Have her seen, treated and spayed immediately. This is the only course of action if you want to keep her.

Thanks for the responses, which were helpful pieces to the reintegration of this puzzle. A urinary tract infection seems likely, but... how could it have passed so quickly, with no remnants of the bacteria visible in her appearance? One minute she seemed to be on the brink of death... the next minute she is happy and bouncy as always. I don't know. Nevertheless, I will take her to the doctor tomorrow. She needs to get her shots already. Thank heavens she is okay, though!

You don't KNOW if a urinary tract infection has passed...she needs to be diagnosed and treated by your vet..urinary tract infections don't go away on their own.
Again, do NOT wait on this, get her to a vet immediately for an exam and urinalysis and to schedule a spay. If she has a urinary tract infection, you don't want to get vaccinations until the infection has been treated and resolved. Your vet will advise/schedule a spay accordingly.

Also, there are organizations that could help with the cost of the spay. I've had 15 cats spayed and neutered (8 of which we own) and the certificates are a big help.

Like Traci said, every heat cycle puts her at risk for various problems. Good luck and keep us posted.
