strange behavior
strange behavior
help i have a three week old kitten and last night out of the blue started crying as if in distress and acting like he was chocking. So we aspirated his throat and made sure he was breathing normally. However he has been getting more and more listless and still cries as if in distress and refuses to eat. I have been trying to start bottle feeding and he hasn't taken to it yet. Any suggestions or advice to help me save this precious little new life?
Re: strange behavior
he needs to get to a vet NOW...they can go downhill in a heartbeat...and sounds like this one is...sounds like he has a major upper respiratory infection and he needs a vet right now and antibiotocs...please do not delay!!
Re: strange behavior
Thank you. have been to the vet and the advise was the bottle feeding.
He still sometimes act as if he may be chocking but hes breathing fine. Now he just wont nurse and is weak. My concern is maybe shock from the tramatic event last night and if we can get him to pull through that. I've been keeping him wrapped up in a towel to keep him warm and that has seemed to calm the skaking and fear. And the drool from his mouth and nose have seemed to dry up. It's just getting him to eat thats right now the challange.

Re: strange behavior
Do you kow what was the cause in the night when he started choking? Did the mother step on him or something?
Re: strange behavior
Get him to a NEW emergency vet RIGHT NOW, like within minutes. If you were bottle feeding, he could have aspirated, this isn't the same thing as what you did, (which you shouldn't have done)....tiny kittens can aspirate in the lungs if too much formula is forced to them, it can go directly to the lungs and cause fatal pneumonia.
DO NOT WAIT ANOTHER MINUTE, get your kitten to an emergency feline vet RIGHT AWAY!!

Re: strange behavior
I returned back to the vet and everything is now okay. Upon closer examination the vet discovered that he had swiped a small piece of his mothers turkey meat and had it lodged in his little throat. Now that it has been sucessufully removed all is getting better and he is doing better and out of distress. Hes not out of the clear yet but on a happier road to recovery. As for me asperiating him last night when he was chocking my vet said that was what helped him to be able to breath today til i got him in to the vet, otherwise he would have not made it through the night. So asperiating him helped save his life. Hes a strong one for 3 weeks old and "scobby 2" says thank you to you all for your concern and helpful sugesstions, and that he wants to keep you all updated on his and his other brothers and sisters in the next few weeks on their progress and new planned mischivious adventures. Also i would like to thank you all for your support and hope to be able to return the favor to others in their times of crisis and health of all their beloved pets. Teresa Scobby2 and Momma Jinx
Re: strange behavior
Teresa, what exactly do you mean when you said you aspirated him? What exactly did you do, give water, formula, use an object?

Re: strange behavior
What kind of turkey meat did he swipe? Canned cat food or deli meat? I hope it's not the later for all cats' sake.
I hope he pulls through to a quick and strong recovery soon.

Re: strange behavior
I think she meant she gave him mouth to mouth.
I had the feeling something might have been stuck!

Thanx for all the replys. Scooby 2 is doing great now eating and growing by leaps and bounds now. I asperiated him with a bulb syringe like you would do a baby. Ive worked with animials all my life and did everything I knew to do and now hes fine. It was a small peice of real turkey that mom snuck into the box. Again thanx for the replies.
