I don't think my dog is eating
I don't think my dog is eating
One of our dogs had died and her sister is still alive, well we now have a puppy. I really don't think my dog is eating, I know the puppy is. Also how do you get a puppy to mind well?

If you think your dog's appetite has decreased considerably, don't wait, get her seen by your vet promptly.

I agree with Traci, your dog needs to see the vet if she isn't eating. Did the older dog stop eating at the same time you got the puppy? She may be upset with having a new dog in the family, but if that's the case and she's not sick, she should start eating again when she gets really hungry. Is it possible the puppy is eating her food and not letting her get it?
As for getting the puppy to mind, you have to take the time to train it plus you have to give it time to grow up. Just like our own babies and and small children, it takes a while for the brain to develop so the they can understand what you want from them. You also need to be consistent. Don't let him get away with something one time, and then get after him for the same thing later. Start with getting him to understand that he has to go outside to relieve himself. Also teach him the word "NO" and always praise him when he does something right. Dogs want to please us, and will learn how to do that by being praised. Teach him one command at a time. "Come" or "Come here" should be one of the first you teach. He must come to you when you call him. At some point he could be in danger (another dog, he gets out and could get hit by a car, a snake in the yard, etc.) and he must come to you when he's called. Be patient and praise him when he does the right thing, and you'll be able to train him to mind you.

I hope you will consider taking your puppy to puppy training classes at one of the major pet store chains. It is a good socialization experience for your pup, and you both will learn a lot!

It's really fun and they learn so much. You have to spend a short time every single day reinforcing what they learn in class. Don't get discouraged because one day it will just kick in and you'll notice that they really get it. And they know they are pleasing you and that tail will wag, wag, wag!!
